THURSDAY, JANUARY 1 3.1 949 THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON PACE THIRTEEN Texas University Still Cherishes Memory of Mule College Station, Tex! ll The song in animal husbandry class at Texas A. & M. goes like this: "Old Beck was a mother, And she's hanpin' on the wall; The only mule in Texas To bear a child a-tall." While as many as 200 students sit in elevated seats and watch professors dissect beef and other animal carcasses, the head of the famous mother mule watches also, from an ornate mounting in the class room. Old Beck's head has been watching the work going on since she gave up the ghost in the early 1930s. But before that she stump ed the genetic experts by proving that a hybrid has hopes of pos terity. She made a mulg and a mother. tMreu ny .iitt'it L. T. Uranham reported the in cident. Me owned Old Beck and Old Beck's companion was a jack. Their babe was a female. Also a national event. Prof. W. L. Stangel, now dean of agriculture at Texas Tech, ar ranged for loan of the rare mule and colt to the college and bun dled up a batch of affidavits to support the story. The same month she arrived at the school, she was mated to an other jack, but they were' separ ated on grounds of incompatibil ity. Then she became the bride of a bay saddle stallion, Pat Murphy. Pat gave them a little stallion colt, with a white star on his fore head. Pat also gave the husban drymen something to write home about. It was a sensation, and Dr. Mark Francis, dean of veterinary medicine, and a corps of student instructors were kept busy an swering huge piles of mail from schools in every section of the country. For the second time, Old Beck had become a mother. The famous female mule then had a third colt. It was deformed, eye in the middle of its forehead, and died within two days.
