Hearfy Welcome Provided
For Oregon Group at Dallas
By Henry N. Fowler
I AKMiciHU' K.lilnr, The Bt'inl llulh-tinl
Dallas, Tex., Dec. 31 According
to current estimates some thou
sand people from Oregon came to
this city for the New Year's day
Cotton bowl game. Some drove,
many more came by plane, in ad
dition to the trainload of 240 fans
who arrived this morning on the
Oregon Journal's Cotton Bowl
special.
A welcoming committee board
ed the train at Fort Worth and
rode in to Dallas, where members
of the Southern Methodist univer
sity band were playing Oregon
songs as the train wheeled in.
Chartered buses.-too, were wait
ing to take the Oregonians to the
well appointed Dallas Athletic
club where the privileges of the
showers and swimming pools
were extended to the visitors. Af
ter luncheon at the club the buses
were on hand again, five of them,
and the passengers from the spe
cial enjoyed a two hour tour of
the city.
Tour Cily
The tour included Dallas' fine
park system, its ultra modern ad
ditions as well as its older sec
tions. Judging from appearance
of the residences there must be
more than the average proportion
of wealthy families in Dallas.
Much of the construction is clone
in brick, manufacture of which is
one of the many local industries.
One of the features of public de
velopment is Fair park,- where a
splendid array of buildings used
for fail' purposes and also provid
ing auditorium and museum facil
ities were seen. Another was a
largo natural lake, spring-fed,
which was skirted on the drive.
Margins of the lake are open to
the public; farther back, but com
manding a view of the water are
homes and grounds approaching
estate proportions.
Use Winter Grass
Notable in residential improve
ment is the introduction of a win
ter grass lit was called rye grass I
for use in lawns. Waler, of which
Dallas has an abundant supply,
apparently has little or no effect,
even in the generally warm win
ter here, on ordinary grasses,
which remain dead looking and
brown; but the winter grass was
a pleasing green. Dallas will be
a far more attractive place when

The tour included S.M.U. cam
pus, a glimpse of the university's
stadium, larger than most in the
Pacific Northwest, but now inade
quate for the football crowds that
turn out here. The buses passed
the high school field, where Jim
Aiken's Oregon squad has been
having its practice sessions, and
the Cotton bowl Itself, where a
sell out (67,000 seats) was report
ed for the New Year's day game.
Visit Big Store
Finally, back to the heart of
the business section, where a visit
to the Neirnan Marcus department
store, one of the top establish
ments of its kind in the .United
Stales. A fashion show, especially
arranged for the visitors, was a
feature here.
A breathing spell came In the
day's crowded program when the
parly returned to the train, spot
ted at the Dallas terminal, hut at
7:30 buses again appeared to prif
vide transportation to the Adol
phus hotel, headquarters for Ore
gon supporters in Texas this week
end. There two Oregon New Years
affairs were on, one for the Journ
al's party, one for University al
umni. Oregonians were not the
only ones welcoming 1949. Dallas
was doing it, too, and in very
definite fashion. No question
about it, 1948 was finished.
' Saturday night after the game,
'Iho return trip to Oregon begins.
The train will follow the southern
route, through Kan Antonio, El
Paso. Tucson, Phoenix and Los
Angeles, then turning north to
San Francisco and on for Hie last
lap of the journey to Portland.
Planes, in the main, will start the
flight hack on Sunday. Cars will
be leaving at all hours for the Pa
cific Northwest.

Stocks Await
Truman's.Talk
New York, Jan. 4 ill" The stock
market settled down today to
await President Truman's mes
sage on tlie state of th- unioii.
Trading fell off to the smallest
total since Oct. 11, and prices
firmed moderately. The' meager
rally reflected some short cover
ing, and a drying up of selling
pressure which yesterday brought
the widest industrial decline for
a first trading day of the year in
17 years and the widest first day
rail drop in 45 years.
A formidable array of favor
able corporate news played a part
in sustaining the market. The
list ranged over a broad expanse
of American industry anil, ac
cording to some experts, belied j
predictions of an Imminent re
cession.
