FRIDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1948 THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON PAGE SEVEN Potato Growers Approve Efforts Prinevllle, Dec. 24 Fred Pratt, who from his headquarters at Redmond is handling the price support purchase ol potatoes In Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson counties, has won the approval of local grower and shipper interests this week because of his efforts to divert the fullest possible movement of potatoes through regular commercial market chan nels instead of stimulating gov ernment buying. It was reported that up to De cember 18, the three counties had forwarded for the month a total of 390 cars of Netted' Gems or Deschutes Russetts as they are known to a great part of the trade. It is estimated that no more than 100 cars of this vol ume were taken over by the com modity credit corporation. . Movement at Lew Ebb Estimates place current stor age holdings in the three coun ties at 1,800 to 2,000 cars, which Is declared normal for the season. The movement of potatoes from all Central Oregon points is now at low ebb, a condition that is normal during the holiday sea son. Both grower and shipper inter ests of this area are prone to cri ticize Klamath basin potato grow ers for their heavy sales under price support. They are express ing approval of the department of agriculture in halting these pur chases after 2,000 cars had been bought for livestock food. If growers of this area, it is de clared, had pressed for govern ment buying to the extent ap parent in the Klamath basin, a shortage might well have been created with the result that mar kets relying on the district for supply would have been forced to call Xor mid-western Importa tions, a situation that developed last year. Kills (United 1'reu Science Writer) New York tinMan, if it ever becomes necessary, can live off the insects of the land. And, according to Dr. E. O. Essig, an entomologist of the Uni versity of California, Berkeley, Cat., man's plight on earth may lead to using insects as food. At a meeting of entomologists in New York, Dr. Essig recalled that Insects have been on the earth for some 50,000,000 years and that their survival rate is much better than man's. Each year, the insects take millions of tons of food away from man, and they follow man wherever he opens up new agricultural lands via irrigation or reclamation. Used In Many Lands Essig said it's about time that science made some earnest inves tigations into the possibility of using insects as food. He said human beings In many lands already are eating insects and that "probably the most gen erally available and preferred in sects the world over are locusts or migratory grasshoppers." The grasshoppers, he said, "oft en appeared unexpectedly from unknown lands in countless num bers and, while in most cases, they destroyed the local vegetation, in cluding crops, they became food for hungry human beings." He said certain types of grass hoppers now are being sold as food in Mexico and the Philip- Thompson & Wilson Paint Company T12 Franklin I'hone 1542-W I. "They were eaten, either fresh, toasted, dried, boiled or roasted," he said. In Mexico; he said, white cater pillars are "put up in cans and sold at groceries," and in China no less than 50 species of insects are consumed in the dally diet.
