Bv Oscar Fralov (United Fhm Sport. Writer) Philadelphia, Dec. 20 IIP Some time late today the Philadelphia Eagles will be ready to celebrate their first National Football league championship. It's going to take them that long to thaw out after beating the Chicago Cardinals, 70, in a driving snowstorm. Their cleats clattered only slightly louder than their teeth chattered as they dripped into their dressing room after the game yesterday. The last guys in wound up farthest away from the radiators. There were only a few scattered cheers. Faces and hands a raw tomato red from the wind and slashing snow and their uniforms sodden, tney were giaa that they had won out even nap- pier that the clock finally had run out. Face Burled In Snow "Cold." said Steven Van Buren, who scored the game's only touch down, "I'll never get warm again. And It seems that every time they tackled me I wound up with my face buried in the snow. Greasy Neale, the old Cincinnati outfileder, who was the winning coach, removed a hat which was trickling ice water down his neck and grunted, "It's been doing that all afternoon. Man, I've never seen it any worse for football. Yes, I guess I have though, at that. It was a day Just like this when I coached Ironton. Ohio. against Portsmouth in 1930. Only difference was, it was zero then." There was another dillerence, Neale grinned. "I lost that other game on two field goals by Frosty Peters." . i Handsome Tommy Thompson, not quite so good looking now with a gash across the bridge of his bright red nose, was the only one who didn't think it was so bad.. ... . Didn't feel a thing after' the first quarter," Thompson laugh ed. "I was numb." - Miles of Tape It was quite a while before the battered Behemoths started to strip off their uniforms. They adhesive tape which covered most of them. At the end of a rugged season, they were patched togeth er with miles of It. . And, while they, showered, Neale gave most of the credit for the triumph to Thompson, who directed the team and did a lot of running, and the hard-driving Van Buren. i "The Cardinals would have been tougher on a good field, but I think we wouia nave Deen, too, Neale said. "We had planned some new plays but we weren't able to use them because of the snow. So we beat them with the old plays." An attendant stood on a trunk and announced that by winning, each Eagle player received 5666 more than if they had lost One burly player, huddled by now In an overcoat, barked "That's the last time I'll ever take an hour's bath in ice water at any price." ..' The agreement was just about unanimous. Grade Schools . Open Hoop Play GRADE SCHOOL LEAGUE Team Won Lost Pet.
