PAGE TWO THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON MONDAY, DECEMBER 20. 1948 Survey Reveals Oil Supply Will Aged Recluse Found Dead in Junk-Filled Shack HI supply YYII last 200 Years New York, Dec. '20 (IP A new . survey showed today that the world Is far Irom running out of oil and that synthetic fuels will not be necessary for 200 years or more. ' The report came from Dr. E. V. Murphree, oil development expert, who addressed a meeting of the New York sectldn of the Ameri can Chemical society. The survey, he said, has indi cated that "the potential yield of crude petroleum ot both the United States and the world auite hich. for the world as whole amounting to -about 264 years of supply at the present rate ol consumption." - Cm a hnfaiu nf thnf PflHmAtP. atomic scientists can take their time in designing that automobile which will run forever on a cnunK of uranium. . Murphree said that the "world also contains large deposits ol na tural gas, oil shale, and tar sands which can be used to augment production of oil products." Difficulty Overcome J. As to the United States' oil sup. ply, Murphree said, the difficulty encountered in meeting demands last year has been overcome, and it is expected that productive capacity will be in excess of de mand lor a number ol years ahead, barring war. He said that exploration of crude oil has been stimulated, ac celerating the rate of discovery of new oil deposits, and that new es timates have been made as to the amount of petroleum that should be found in the United States and other countries. ' Murphree said that - the 1947 shortage of fuels caused new in terest in synthetic oils.' "It Is felt." he said, "that be fore long it may be possible to produce synthetic fuels on a basis that is competitive with produc tion of oil products from crude pe troleum. "Right now, the production of gasoline from natural gas is con sidered reasonably competitive with the production of gasoline from crude oil." ... . :, -. . However, from' the standpoint of investment' required, he said, "gasoline from petroleum is still somewhat cheaper." He said that a German devel oped process of making synthetic fuel probably would be Used, but he also predicted that improved processes would be developed as . i . i t .i-, . . . . me nine ueaia iu una uuuilliy to rely on synthetic fuel. , . .. Residents Flee As French Leave Berlin, Dec. 20 iu Residents of the anti-communist village of Stolpe fled Into the western sec tors of Berlin today after French occupation troops handed the vil lage and 350 acres of rich farm land over to the Russians. French military authorities de nied officially the Russians had forced them to withdraw In re prisal for the demolition of the Berlin r a d.l o aerial towers last.) week. But French officials ad mitted privately that the with drawal was in the nature of a strategic retreat, presumably to soften possible soviet reprisals in connection with the incident. The French explained official' ly that completion of Tegel air field near Stolpe had made the village of several hundred use less to the French, who had in tended originally to use its land for construction of an airport. The town, five miles inside the soviet zone north of Berlin and just outside the French zone ol the former German capital, had been in the hands of French oc cupation forces under the terms of a 1945 agreement in which the Russians ceded it to France.
