Gold Issues Rise
On Stock Market

stock market turned irregular to
day with trading slightly more
active than in the previous ses
sion. ,
Although the general list did
little, there was a flurry of buy
ing In the gold shares, both on the
New York stock exchange - and
the curb, with gains on tne "big
board" ranging at one time to
more than two points In Home-
stake Mining. Gains in gold stock
listed on the curb were fractional.
Wall street was at a loss to ex
plain the interest in the gold
stock group, but the demand in
u. s. markets may have reflected
buying In South African gold
snares in London, '
The unsettlement In the main
list of stocks grew chiefly out of

rector of the fruit and vegetable
branch of the U. S. department of
agriculture, with headquarters in
Portland, spoke to the group on
"Potato Marketing."

lar to the wheat league commis
sion, with the purpose of adver
tising potatoes, maintaining a
quarantine In Oregon'and cooper
ating with the Oregon state exten
sion service on seed potatoes and
