Counterfeit Bills
Flooding Cities
In Christmas Rush
Chicago, Dec. 16 ill'i Extra se
cret service men were detailed to
day to search Chicago for print
ing presses which have been
grinding out hundreds of thous
ands of dollars in counterfeit
money. .
Harry D. Anheier, in charge of
the secret service here, said the
counterfeit ' ring is believed to
have its headquarters in the Chi
cago area, and is one -of the big
gest In years.
Apparently it hopes to cash in
on the Christmas rush, he said,
in the belief that merchants do
not have time to examine the
money handed them. For the last
six weeks, Anheier said, counter
feiters have been flooding the na
tion with fake money.
Whether all of it has come
from Chicago, or whether two or
more rings are operating inde
pendently is not known, authori
ties said. New York and Chicago
have been major dumping
grounds for the spurious curren
cy. But the bogus bills also have
been passed in the midwest, in
the southwest, and in scattered
sections from coast to coast.
' Four arrests Made
So far, four arrests have been,
made in Chicago and Illinois. But
in each case, the suspect was a
"passer," not one of the key mem
bers of the ring.
The amount of counterfeit mon
ey passed on to the public has
been estimated as high as $1,000,
000. Anheier said, however, that
the amount actually spotted to
date would not exceed $500,000.
Anheier said the counterfeit
syndicate sells its product in big
lots and apparently knows how
to make connections with "pass
ers" who never have been Involv
ed in counterfeiting before.
Most of the bogus money spot
ted so far, he said, has been $10
and $20 bills. He said they were
"dangerous," the secret service
term for clever reproductions.
Most laymen would have a dif
ficult time spotting them, he said,
because the engraving job is "excellent."

Brown or White,
All Eggs Alike
""' Washington ll Food superstl
. tions die hard, the agriculture. tie
partnient says.
Take the one about eggs. Many
people say they prefer brown
shell eggs to white or vice versa.
But eggs are eggs, the depart
ment says. There's no difference
in taste (if both kinds are fresh)
or nutritive value.
Then there is the housewives'
ai'gument over the relative mol lis
of cane and beet sugar for jelly
making. There's no chemical dif
ference whatever, according to
the experts.
No Danger in Cans
Some folks still cling to the no
tion that food will spoil if set
away in a can. Although such acid
foods as fruit or tomatoes may
acquire a slightly metallic taste,
thoy are not damaged. Food also
may be kept safely in aluminum
utensils, the department says. A
darkening of the aluminum docs
not indicate harm to the food.
Many food fallacies are con
cerned with combinations of cer
tain dishes at' the same meal.
There's no need to hesitate about
drinking milk with fish, sour
cherries, tomatoes or any other
food. If some of the combinations
"curdle in the stomach, so nuicn j
the bettor for your digestion. No i
two foods that are good for you
separately will hurt you when
eaten together, nutritionists ex
plain. And in case anyone is still won
dering, appendicitis is not caused
from eating fruit seeds.

Convict Admits
Murder Charge
Angleton, Tex., Dec. 16 UnA
33-year-old convict faced murder
charges today for slicing off the
head Of another prisoner in the
presence of 225 other inmates wno
"dummied up", to protect the
slayer.
Ernest Cleve Jones, 33, con
fessed yesterday that he decapi
tated Clarence William Redwine,
38, with a heavy vegetable knife
during the evening meal at the
Retrieve prison farm near here.
The farm's entire population
was eating in the mess hall at the
time of the killing Monday but
the murder was not discovered
until they inarched out. Then
guards found Redwin's body lying
on the floor. His head lay on the
table where it had fallen next to
his plate.
Four guards were on duty in
the mess hall but at the moment
of the slaying their attention was
attracted to a disturbance raised
by 10 or more prisoners in anoth
er part of the mess hall. It was
not determined whether the dis
turbance was created deliberately
to distract attention from the killing.
Self-Cleaning Paint
Devised in Britain
London mi Engineers on Brit
ain's railway lines can't miss the
signals now. A new white paint
has been developed for signal
posts that stays white in spite of
dirt and weather.
The self-cleaning paint, made
with a new pigment, and other
materials wnich are being kept
secret, "shedsV layers throughout
a process of "chalking." In stan
dard paint, the surface disinteg
rates and forms a powdery resi
due which may be washed away
by ram.
While the disintegrating sur
face of the new paint is washed
away by rain, a new layer Is ex
posed underneath. The process is
repeated until the paint has disap
peared entirely but no matter how
thin it wears, no discoloration
takes place.
