Pilgrims' Landing
On Plymouth Rock
Uncelebrated
Plymouth, Mass. HI'i Though
the Pilgrims lunded here In 16:20,
it was 121 years later before their
stepping stone to a new life be
came publicly Identified as Ply
mouth Rock. ,
The man who first got Ply
mouth Rock Into the historical
archives was Elder Thomas Kaun
ce. Shaking with palsy in his
chair at the age of 95, he told the
story of the rock's part In the
Pilgrims' landing as he learned it
from his father.
Even then the rock was begin
ning to crumble, for a wharf had
been built over It. The rock pro
truded through the wharf's sur
face and the passage of barrows
and charts cnipped it.
Hock Spills
It was 1774 before the town
fathers decided to do something
about protecting the rock. Thirty
teams of oxen were linked by a
chain to the rock to move it to the
town square. The rock split in
two. One half fell Into a sand pit
and eventually was buried by
wind and tide. The other half was
' dragged to the square.
Again, 60 years later, the rock
was protected by an iron fence
from souvenir hunters. Still, a
vendor managed to hawk pieces
of the rock "the size of a common
hen's egg" for $1.50 each.
The lost part of the rock was
found in 1859 by the Pilgrim so
ciety. It was serving as a doorstep
for an abandoned warehouse. The
rock was cemented together in
1880 and 40 years later was mov
ed to its "last resting place" near
the bay shore so that its legend
would be more believable for
tourists.
Now It is enshrined In the floor
of a Grecian temple contributed
by the Colonial Dames of America.
