THURSDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1948 Younge THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON PAGE ELEVEN ,r Wallace Emulates Father In Farm Progress Dos Moines, la. HPi -Henry A. Wallace's oldest son is following In his fat tier's farming footsteps. The former secretary of agri culture and vice president was a pioneer In the experimental de velopment of hybrid corn. His son, Henry B. Wallace, Is doing the same thing with thick ens. As a young man on a farm 50 miles west 'Of here, and as a stu dent at Iowa State College of Ag riculture, Henry A. Wallace spent his spare time developing belter strains of seed corn. He formed a commercial company specializing in hybrid corn, which has revolu tions) the cornbelt in the last 10 years. " Company Formed Henry Browne Wallace, now 32, was tinkering with chickens while his father worked with coin. The younger Wallace has form- ed a company which markets the hybrid etiickens developed by the same process of careful breeding selection that his father used to produce belter corn. The breeding pens of the Hv Line chicken farms owned by Henry 13. Wallace at nearby Dai las Center has hatched more than 8,000,000 etiickens in 19-18. Hybrid corn has increased yield averages as much as 15 bushels per acre. Wallace claims his hy brid chickens have an average egg production of from two to six dozen eggs more per hen than standard-bred chickens. ! The process of hybrid corn 1 breeding starts with in-breeding, j whereby a strain of corn repro-1 duces ilself year after year so that Its breeding factors will become j exclusive. The in bred strains are J then crossed with one another, , reulling in a hybrid corn which has larger ears, higher yield, and other desirable qualities. i More Difficult j The same process is followed ; with chickens, except that the in breeding process is more diffi-! cult. Wallace estimates that "many j years, several hundred thousand ! dollars, and trained genetics per- i sonnel" are necessary to develop ; a hybrid bird that can be relied on ! to lay well. He believes it takes three times as long to develop "the same de gree of in breeding purity" in chickens as in corn. "After five generations of in breeding of corn, you can get about US per cent purity of breed ing factors," he said. "With chick ens, five generations will produce only a 0 per cent purity." That is because chicken inbreed ing is possible only through a brother-sister relationship, where as a corn plint can. through pol lenation, reproduce itself. Cheaper Furniiure No Bargain When Workmanship Is Poor Corvallls, Dec. 16 (Special) the wood to see If the wood sur That hurried last minute selec- faces have been matched perfect- tion of a piece of "bargain" Christ mas furniture may turn out to be cheap in price-yet anything but a bargain. Cher.ply made furniture is ex pensive at any price, declares Mrs. Myrtle Carter, O.S.C. extension specialist In clothing and home furnishings. Other ways of econ omizing In home furnishings are uetter man sacrificing quality lor price in upholstered furniture. In this typo of furniture, she says, hidden features are as important as exposed portions of the piece. Furniture joints are the most important guide to quality, Mrs. Carter states. In buying quality furniture-insist upon double dow els or mortise and tenon joints: A dowel, Mrs. Carter explains, is a wooden peg that joins two pieces of furniture frame togeth er, mortise and tenon joints mean that a tongue is cut in one piece of wood to permit it to fit into a corresponding groove In the other piece to be joined. Either double doweling or mor tise is a sure sign of firm con struction. In buying plywood furniture, Mrs. Carter suggests examining ly. Careless matching, she de claims, is a fair sign of careless workmanship in other parts of the furniture. Good quality furniture will al ways come " equipped with well made hardware. Hinges, handles and brackets are the parts to be examined. In buying a chair, for example, there is no better test to see if it is comfortable than sitting in it. The seat of the average good straight chair will be the same height from the floor as an adult person's knee. Nineteen inches is about right for seat depth. An easy chair, however, can be 24 inches deep and still be comfort able. Choosing a reliable dealer and buying furniture which carries the label of a well-known manufac turer are also important consid erations for the average furni ture buyer, concludes Mrs. Carter.
