Fatal Accident Dims Sweden's Lucia Ceremony Stockholm, Dec. 14 nil One Swedish girl was dead by fire and another was in a critical condition after nationwide ceremonies hon oring the memory of a martyr named Lucia. . The victims were two of thous ands of Sweden's prettiest girls who took part in the Lucia day tcstival yesterday in cities, towns and villages all over Swed en. The festival honored a beauti ful Christian girl named Lucia. She was killed by the sword In the fourth century when, accord ing to legend, the infidels were unable to take her life In an at tempt to burn her at the stake. Mrs. Gertrud Akymberg was burned fatally when she tripped on her long wjilte skirt while wearing the traditional candles in her hair as she went to serve her landlord coffee in bed at Tierp in central Sweden. (iown Catches Fire Severely burned was Kersten Braennstroem, 26, a nurse in a northern Sweden hospital. Her white gown caught fire while she was serving patients in the hos pital. She was to have been mar ried this Christmas. The favorite nurse at the hos pital, she entered the ward with candles in her hair, heading a procession of girls all carrying coffee. She stumbled over her skirt, fell, and the flames envel oped her. As a part of the festival, 11 girls carried coffee and cakes to the rooms of three Nobel prize winners. They were Dr. Paul Mueller, medicine; T. S. Eliot, lit erature, and Prof. Patrick Black- ett, physics. The casualties dimmed but did not postpone the scheduled de parture tonight of Stockholm's Lucia queen, Marianne Hylen, for New York. The 17-year-old beauty was selected in a contest last month and took part in yester days iestivai. A Lucia quceft from Seattle. Asa Gudjohnsen, sat beside her ana ottered greetings from Amer icans of Scandinavian extraction. Marianne was scheduled for a big New York welcome, with Mayor William O'Dwyer as host. She will go on to Philadelphia Dec. 17 to receive the keys to the city at Independence hall. She also may visit Minneapolis and Seattle. TO SELL TREES Prineville, Dec. 14 The Future Farmers of America of the Crook County high school braved the storms of the past week in har vesting a supply of Christmas trees for local residents. The group of junior farmers have set up a sales yard for their trees be side the manual training shop at the high school grounds. Proceeds of their sales will be applied to development of F.F.A. projects, it was .announced by Donald M. Gabbert, high school principal. Wall street traced the price dip primarily to fax selling although some profit-taking also was evi dent as a consequence of last week's rise in market values. The optimistic view of the New Year was taken by banker A. P. Giannlni, founder and chairman of the Bank of America, largest commercial bank in the nation, who said In Washington that he could see no signs of a develop ing slump. Furthermore, he said, there is little likelihood of a U.S. depression as long as Europe needs American goods in such heavy volume. A prediction that American au tomobile manufacturers will pro duce over 5,000,000 vehicles again in 1949 was made by an official of the Automobile Manufacturers association.
