PAGE TWO Bears Score 45 to 25 Victory Oyer Uni-High The Lava Bear basketball team gave Bend fans their first taste ol victory last night by over whelming the University hieh BChool team of Eugene 45 to 25. With high-reaching backboard work by Doug Hogland, center, and Larry Standlfer, forward, the isears jumped into an early lead and were never threatened. Hog land opened the scoring with two free throws, and Bob Hawes, Sul livan and Hogland got field goals to register a count of eight for tne Hears Deiore university high got on the scoreboard with a field goal by Fletcher. The Bears led 12 to 4 at the end of the first period and went on up to a 25 to 7 lead by the end os. me iirsc nair. Uses New Unit The wide margin enabled Coach Russ Acheson to use an entirely new unit irom late in the second period until' early in the fourth quarter. Hawes was high scorer for Bend and for the game with 13 points from five field goals and three free throws. Lynch led the Uni versity high scoring column with four field goals and two free throws for 10 points. In use for the first time was the new electric scoreboard and clock given by Dr. and Mrs. J. S. Williams Bowling TEAMS TO TRAVEL Five Bend bowling teams will be on the road this week end, with two heading for Grants Pass to enter the all-Elks bowling tour ney and with the other three heading to Burns. Members of the Bend Elks "A" squad going to Grants Pass are George Norcott, Paul Sevy, Jack Kargman, How ard Plnneo and one other player. The "B" team will be composed of Leon Devcreaux, Leon Deve reaux, Jr., Howard Kopp, Elmer Brown and Merrill Ross. OREGON Ezzard Charles Kayoes Baski In 11th Round New York, Dec. 11 (lii Ezzard Charles was willing today to meet any other heavyweight contender although the Cincinnati Negro ac tually won the right to a June title fight last night by stopping big Joe Baksl in the 11th round. Referee Ruby Goldstein award ed Charles the victory on a tech nical knockout at 2:33 of the 11th. Goldstein refused to permit Baksl to continue because tne ex-coal miner from kulpmont, Pa., was bleedlne profusely from ' cuts above and below his left eye. The bout, before an unexpect edly small crowd of 11,194 at Mad ison Square garden, had been scheduled for 15 rounds. It was slated for 15 rounds instead of 10 because the principals were fight ing for the right to a June title shot at Joe Louis. Outweighed 32 Vi Founds Charles was Impressive. Al though outweighed 32 Mi pounds, he weathered a terrific body bat tering and then tagged his larg er opponent with the first knock out of 'his career. - It was the first time Baksl had failed to last the distance in 64 professional fights. The fans, who paid $40,833, thought Goldstein should have let Baksl fight a -little longer; but it was apparent when Goldstein stepped in. that the lumbering Pennsylvanian had been beaten Into bloody helplessness. When the bell ended the 10th, Baksl weighing 210 pounds Was bleeding from gashes above and below his left eye, from a slight cut in his right brow, from a cut on the bridge of his nose, Irom his nostrils and from his mouth.
