Teacher Shortage
To Lack of Leisure
Tallahassee, Fla. ill') A Florida
educator asserts that elementary
teachers need more time during
the school day to "relax, drink a
coke, smoke a cigarette or gossip
with other teachers."
Dr. J. C. Peel, Dean at Florida
Southern college, says the teacher
in the lower grades "has children
under foot or in her hair from
8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. five days a
week."
The lack of free time, he says,
is directly responsible for the
shortage of instructors in schools
ull over the country. He thinks
something should be done to at
tract more teachers to the elemen
tary schools.
"it is Impossible to do good high
school or college work on a base
of ineffective education in the
lower grades," Dr. Peel declared
in an article written for the Flor
ida School Director.
"The greatest dlsadvnntn An nf
f elementary teaching is that the
J teacher is allowed no time during
p a school day in which she can be
away irom ine cniiaren," he
writes.
This, says Dr. Peel, is the aver
age day of an elementary teacher,
outside of conducting her classes:
She must be at school 30 min
utes early so the children won't
get into trouble by beating her to
the gun. Two or three times a
day she must have "tip-toe" re
cess, personally supervised, to
train in proper habits.
At recess, the teacher must take

Cigarets Traded
For Europe Furs
Colorado Springs, Colo., Nov. 8
iUl An air force sergeant and his
wife told police today that they
swapped 1,500 cartons of Ameri
can cigarets in Vienna for the es
timated S100.000 worth of fine
furs, furniture and jewelry found
in their modest bungalow here.
Master sergeant Wiley Clyde
Walters, 40, a veteran of 15 years
in the army, and his wife Miriam,
42, were held for investigation.
Police said federal agents prob
ably would want to investigate
the possibility that the couple
evaded payment of import duties
on the valuables obtained in the
European black miirket.
Among the treasure crammed
Into their house were crates of
ivory and silver figurines, an
tiques, valuable paintings in gold
frames, fox fur sets, a quantity
of narcotics and a grand piano.
Taken Into Custody
Walters and his wife were tak
en into custody Saturday night
after she aroused the suspicions
of a Jeweler to whom she tried
to sell an elaborate diamond
ring. Police chief I. D. Bruce said
Walters was "too drunk to be
questioned" when arrested.
Bruce estimated the value of
the loot to be at least $100,000
and possibly as high as $200,000,
but he said it would take an an
tique expert to determine the ex
act value of the'furniture and the
art objects. Unpacked crates of
goods filled two whole rooms, he
said.
