Langlle virtually had won Washington's gubernatorial election today as mounting re turns continued to swell his lead ? over Incumbent Gov. Mon C. Wall- i gren. With more than 84 per cent of !v the state's 3,457 precincts tabulat ed, Wallgren still refused to con cede defeat despite his opponent's 21,000-vote margin. However, the i republican was considered "in." Langlie's running mate, Herb ert Hamblen, was falling behind Incumbent Lieutenant Governor . Victor A. Meyers who was mak i Jng an Impressive bid for his flf til straight term. Late returns gave Meyers a 4,000-vote advantage. : Makes Comeback " ' In making the first gubernator- ial comeback in the state's his tory, Langlie handed Wallgren his ; first political defeat in Iti years. The democrat had won seven straight political contests includ ing . five straight congressional races, one for senator and one for governor. President Truman had picked , up this state's eight electoral votes and was steadily adding to ms decisive 40,uuo vote plurality over Gov. Thomas E. Dewey. In the third district, where the states closest congressional fight i had been waged, It now appeared that incumbent Russel V. Mack of Hoqulaim had defeated former Congressman Charles R. Savage. G.O.P. Men Win Thus, In the six races, four re '. publicans had been re-elected, one was defeated and a democratic in cumbent was returned to con gress. The democrats had picked up one new seat. Former Sen. Hugh B. Mitchell defeated Incum bent republican Homer R. Jones in the heavily populated (Seattle Bremerton) first district. Detroit Damsite Clearing Planned Portland, Ore., Nov. 4 UH The Portland District Engineers today announced bids for clearing the Detroit damsite would be called Nov. 12 and opened Nov. 30. Col. O. E.' Walsh also announc ed bids for the construction of a small boat basin at The Dalles would be opened Dec. 8. Bids for the major part of the Detroit dam will be called, next spring,.
