PAG SIXTEEN THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1948 Burning Subterranean Fire 75 Years May Be Quenched 'Amldon.'N.D. UH Construction of a proposed dam across the Lit tle Missouri river may in a , lew years snuff out North Dakotu's "fires of hell." The proposed dam promises to Inundate flames which have burn ed steadily underground for more than 75 years. Over that time a vein of lignite has burned steadi ly below the earth's surface. creating three miles of miniature badlands. The burning coal mine now is only three miles from the big bend of the Little Missouri, where the bureau of reclamation is con sidering construction of a dam. The 80th congress appropriated $10,000 for a survey of the area and the state water commission has put up a similar amount. No one knows what started the underground fire. But legend says the fire was burning at least 75 years ago. That figure is verified by the molten rocks and baked earth which mark Its path. Fire Creeps Ahead During the past 20 years the , flames are known to have inched their way about a mile and more than three miles of area shows the results of past burning. There is always a crater through which the burning flam es can ue seen. . ... One rancher described the scene by saying, "You look about 30 feet into hell." Legend says that in the early days a cowboy 'called Tex got drunk and decided to ride into the burning coal mine. He told his friends about his plan and spurred his horse through the snowdrifts toward the mine: Neither Tex nor the horse, so the legend goes, was ever seen again.
