New Highs Made By Steel Issues By T. W. Klenlen (United Preni Financial Writer) New York, Oct. 23 (U'lStocks opened on gains ranging to a point with steel Issues making new highs for the year, but mild profit-taking turned the list Ir regular at the close. Wall street said today's light selling was primarily caused by the good advantage in prices pre viously this week which at last night's close had boosted the mar ket value of all listed Issues by about $1,500,000,000. Trading vas fairly active, al though the pace slackened after the first hour. Sizeable blocks were frequent on the opening, ranging to 4000 shares in Inter national Nickel and including 3300 in Pennsylvania railroad and 2500 U. S. Steel. The market community viewed the future as highly favorable, particularly on the domestic front. Earnings statements recently have shown good gains over 1947 and industry generally is expected to find 1948 a better year than last. Long-Range Subs To Pose Danger Lawrence, Kans., Oct. 23 Ui'i Adm.
