Trading vas fairly active, al
though the pace slackened after
the first hour. Sizeable blocks
were frequent on the opening,
ranging to 4000 shares in Inter
national Nickel and including 3300
in Pennsylvania railroad and
2500 U. S. Steel.
The market community viewed
the future as highly favorable,
particularly on the domestic front.
Earnings statements recently
have shown good gains over 1947
and industry generally is expected
to find 1948 a better year than
last.

Alaska Crippled
By Ocean Tie-up
Seattle, Oct. 23 (IB Critical
Alaska defense work is stalled
for lack of materials, a spokes
man for the Alaska junior cham
ber of commerce said today.
Ralph F. Westover, vice presi
dent of the chamber, flew here
from Anchorage In a new move
towards ending the maritime tie
up. Westover took the lead In In
viting congressman Charles Kers
ten, R., Wis., to make his recent
investigation of alleged commu
nist activity in Alaska and yes
terday's one-day hearing on the
maritime situation in San Francisco.-
He said that although the mil
itary in Alaska is getting some
supplies, the work of many small
subcontractors Is being delayed
by the strike because of lack of
materials. "We want shipping re
sumed as soon as possible, with
a contract between labor and
management that is binding so
we can have continuity of serv
ice instead ot the haphazard ship
ping service of the past 14 years."
Plenty of Food
The visiting Alaskan said there
is at present plenty of food in
Alaska and starvation of the 'peo
ple cannot be charged, but the
strike has decreased consumer
buying power in Alaska by at
least 30 per cent.
Westover was sent here for
conferences with the Waterfront
Employers' association. Mayor
William F. Devln and leaders of
the striking CIO longshoremen.
