Bolsters Market
By T. W. Klenlen
(United H Finnnci.l Writer!
New York, Oct. 22 U'' The
stock market rose fractions to
around 2 points today as substan
tial buying developed in steel and
oil shares. Trading picked up to
the best pace since last July 19.
Sentiment in Wall street bright
ened on indications from Paris
that Moscow may come to an
agreement with the western pow
ers on the Eerlin Impasse.
Domestic news was of a bullish
nature. Earnings continue to
show gains over 1947 and Wall
street held rising hopes for some
sort of dividend news when direc
tors of U. S. Steel Corp. meet
next Tuesday.
The healthy tone of the U. S.
economy was underscored this
week by disclosure of record pro
duction in steel mills, electricity
output and crude oil production.
Carloadings were at a new high
since Nov. 1, 1947.

But a dispute affecting 6,000
United States Rubber company

in protest of disciplinary action
against an employe Wednesday.
The trouble was settled in time
for afternoon shifts to report yes

suspend operations and send 6,000
workers home.
A company spokesman said he
"had no idea" when the dispute
