Brannan Backs
Price Support
Chicago, Oct. 1 OP) Agricul
ture secretary Charles F. Bran
nan denied today that the govern
ment price support program is
"responsible .for the high cost of
food."
He blamed high food prices on
"abnormally high" demand, the
public's taste for more "expensive
foods," and "increased food mar
keting charges."
Brannan told the Grain and
Feed Dealers National association
that price supports are being
blamed unfairly by some for
keeping food costs up.

Ouster of Reds
U. S. Problem
New Brunswick, N. J.,' Oct. 1
Oft Gov. Earl Warren told a pre
dominantly student audience to
day that the American people are
faced with the problem of getting
communists out of the Truman
administration.
"We cannot blow hot and cold
on the Issue of communism,"
Warren said. "We must stand
fast against what communism
stands for and what it wishes to
do in the United States.
"With the Truman administra
tion it is a question of putting
out the reds they have already
put in. What the American peo
ple want today is an administra
tion which would never havB put
them there in the first place."

18-State Swing
En Route witli President Tru
man, Oct. 1 ari..-V'ifsident Tru
man headed for home through
Kentucky and West Virginia to
day, confident that his exhaustive
ISstate swing hud garnered a
lot of votes.
The president was making a
strong finish to his big tour. He
scheduled 15 speeches today,
winding up with a major address
at Charleston, W. Va., tonight. He
returns to the White House to
morrow morning.
In his big talk at Louisville, Ky.,
lastnight, Truman put in a stout
plug for his Kentucky running
mate, Sen. Alben W. Barkley, and
then berated the republicans and
the National Association of Manu
facturers for using "vicious . . .
tommyrot" to wreck his anti-inflation
plan.
He charged that "the reason the
NAM set out to destroy price con
trol was that, in their greed, the
leaders of big business wanted to
make higher profits." He accus
ed the republican party of "carry
ing out" NAM policies in refusing
to adopt his recommendations for
price control.
"In 1946," he said, "the NAM
set out ori a well-planned and
well-financed campaign to destroy
price controls, and in one year
the organization spent $3,000,000
for this purpose."
He denied that business suffer
