FBI Record Cited "A current FBI report listed 1.288.393 arrests for drunkenness and drunken driving in 1947," said Mrs. Black, "and the arrests were made in towns with a combined population of more than 49,000, 000." -; . , Mrs. Margaret C. Munns of Se attle and Burlingame, Cal., treas- -' urer of the world's WCTU, told the delegates that consumer 'ev penditures for alcoholic beverages In the United States in the last four years "were more than double the officially estimated cost of the Marshall plan for a "similar period." Mrs. Munns said department of commerce reports, showed this country in the last four years spent .$35,620,000,000 for liquor, wine and beer. She said the offi cially estimated cost of the Mar- : shall plan for the coming four years is $17,000,000,000. . Arab Government Cairo, Sept. 24 IP The Arab newspaper . Peron in a conspiracy which government officials said was directed by a former United States embassy official, John F. Griffiths. Police said Senora Eva Duarte Peron, Argentina's first lady, and several cabinet ministers also were slated for assassination. They reported finding a number ot documents relating to the al leged plot. Among those arrested were CI prlano Reyes, former deputy in the national assembly and well known labor leader, two naval chaplains and one woman. Arrested in Apartment Police swooped down on a fash ionable apartment building in the Avenlda Quintana this morning, officials said, and arrested the 13 alleged conspirators. Jefferson Schools Have 793 Pupils Madras, Sept. 24 (Special) Some 793 students have settled down to their desks in Jefferson county schools, Wayne Foster, county school superintendent, said yesterday. The official break down or. scnool enrollment will be announced next week after teachers reports are in, Foster explained. . Compared to 154 enrolled last year, 207 high school pupils are studying this fall. The grade school enrollment has- Jumped from 4bb to bob, an Increase ot more than 20 per cent. Put eggs In the refrigen tor promptly, and it possible slot them In a covered container. Prehistoric Torture - Deaths Unearned Albuquerque. N. M. (IP) An thropologists have uncovered evi dence of vicious torture methods among prehistoric Indians. Dr. Frank C. Hibben, University of New Mexico anthropologist, un covered tne remains of 10 Indians who had been massacred about 900 years ago after horrible tor ture. The remains were found at an Indian tower near Cuba, N. M. The Indians were of the tower dwellers who flourished) in New Mexico; during the period wheri Europe was having its dark ages. Hibben uncovered the ruins of an Indian tower which he figured was built In 1087 A.D. 'Someone deliberately extermi nated the family which lived In the tower," Hibben said. All ten of the bodies found by Hibben had had the feet cut off, apparently with flint axes. Most of them were minus hands. Many had flint arrowheads embedded In the body. "We have not learned why the massacre took place, the scientist said. "We also found axes, arrow.- heads, knives, and plenty of corn, pumpkin seed and beans, so rob bery was not the motive." " Hibben has uncovered 17 other Indian towers in the Cuba area Nearly all showed signs that the inhabitants had been murdered. Car Seller Finds It Pays To Shop Around Some Atlanta. Ga. Ul'i An Atlanta resident went to an automobile dealer to buy a new car. The dealer asked him to trade In his old model. "What'U you give me for it?" demanded the customer. The dealer said $450 and the customer shook his head. He thought he'd look around for a better offer. Two hours later he returned. "Well, did you do any better?" the dealer Inquired Jovially. Y.; Sent. 24 U Construction of the first atomic powerplant In history will begin this fail on a 4,500-acre tract near here, It was announced today. tne u. t. atomlp energy com mission said the plant will gen erate electric power from nuclear fission on an "experimental' basis, but will not produce power commercially. The pilot plant is expected to "yield important data leading ultimately to the design of re actors (atomic furnaces) which will produce power on a practical scale," the commission said. Army engineers will begin at once to procure land lor the site, which is about 18 miles north of Schenectady and 10 miles west of Saratoga Springs. The commission assured resi dents of the area that every safe guard will be taken and that dang' ers will be "remote." "It is not possible to have a bomb-like explosion," it said. The plant will be operated by the General Electric Co., and will be considered part of the facilities of the present Knolls atomic pow er laboratory at Schenectady, which is under GE management. IIP) Probation officers Joe Hathaway and Fred Pollock believe the best way real ly to get to know boys who have been put on probation In juvenile court is to get the youngsters out in the woods. With the help of persons whom they interested in the project, the two officers have established a camp where each week end they take about 15 boys oil pro bation. 1 1 , "We want these boys to do Just what they feel like doing," said Pollock.
