Newspaper Page TextPAGE SIX THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 1948 Speaker Outlines America's Status As World Power "America's Years In the Sun" ' , was the topic of Robert Kazmayer, autnor, worm traveler and lec turer, at the opening autumn meeting of the Bend Knife and Fork club last night at the Pilot Butte inn, with 150 persons ores- ent. Rev. G. R. V. Bolster presided as head of the club and introduced the speaker. Also held in connec tion with the meeting was the elec tion Pf officers. All officers were re-elected, with Rev. Bolster nam ed president, James W. Bushong, vice president, and James E. Brin- ton, secretary-treasurer. Directors elected for-three-year terms are A. J. Glasgow, Fred H ' Paine, James F. Short and Dr. Max Hemingway. The retiring di rectors are E. L. Nielsen, Robert Mannheimer, Sumner Deltrick and Ray LeBlanc. . Kazmayer, considered the out standing speaker brought to Bend by the club in the past year, touched on America's growth to tne world s leading power a posl tion held in the past by Persia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, Spain and Britain and declared that "Not Russia, not atom bombs nor germ warfare, but 'the worms within' endanger the American position of leadership:" - In his hour and a half talk, Kaz mayer presented a picture of America against a turbulent world background. Russia, he believes will; continue its expansion just short of war. Young Germans, 1k added, are looking forward to a new era of conflict. Final minutes of the dinner meeting were devoted to a ques tion and answer period. The club's ' new year will begin with a dinner meeting on November 1. , . Dance fo Feature Special Numbers, Intermission entertainment If being planned for the semi for- mal dance to be held Saturday night in the Pilot Butte inn Blue room, under auspices of the Bend club of Daughters of the Nile The Bendoleers", home-talent bar bershop quartet, will sing a grour of favorite numbers, and there will be an exhibition of the French minuet by members of the Bendonian dancing club. . Members of the Bendoleers are Lloyd Robldeaux, lead; Bob Dud rey, tenor; Bill Mark, baritone and- Norman Venable, bass. Their selections will Include "Freckles," "Banks of the Wabash," and other familiar old-time tunes. Dancing will be from 9:30 p. m to 13:30 a. m., with music by Er nie Traxler's orchestra. Refresh ments will be served, accordlnp to Mrs. J. A. Dudrey, general chairman. . '.,' First Presbyterian sewing cir cle will meet Tuesday at 2 p.m, at the home of Mrs. Allan Philp, 357 East Marshall. ,.t t ,- : v P.A.L. club will meet Tuesday act 7:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Frank Gates, 1474 Kingston. Faculty Dames will meet Tues day for a 1:30 luncheon at the Pine Tavern. The meeting will follow at the home of Mrs. Roy J. Lively, 1433 East First. Chil dren will be cared for at the home .of Mrs. Harry Drake, 1128 Lexington. ' '- Sons of Norway are planning a social for Saturday evening, be ginning at 8 p.m., at Norway hall. Pinochle and other games will be included in the evening s enter tainment, and refreshments will . be served. Mrs. Sophie Biorvik and Mrs. Ray Curtis will be on the program and refreshment com mlttee, and Ed Dahl and Gunnar Bjorvlk wil have charge of clean up. Members of the lodge and their friends were Invited to at tend. Women of the Moose will hold the first of a series of three card '.parties Friday at 8 p.m., at the .Moose hall on Bond street. Bend-Burns Golf Match Scheduled The Bend Golf club has sched uled a team match with the Val ley Golf club of Burns, with the teams to meet at 9 'a.m. Sunday on the Bend course. woody Lamb. Bend club Dro- fessional, will be in charge of pairings. A return-match on the Burns course will be scheduled for next year. , It Is expected that about 20 Burns golfers will be here for the match. CUB PACK TO MEET Cub Scout Pack No. 25 will meet Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Pine Forest grange hall. All members of the pack were urged to be pres ent, and parents and friends of the boys were invited. The theme for the month Is "Fall Round Up," with all cubs asked to wear cow boy outfits. Prizes will be given for the best costume. Awards and new registration cards will be presented, it was announced. Each cub was asked to bring a pal who is Interested in joining a cub pack. Refreshments will be served after the meeting. Former Bend Girl Engaged To G. O. Strome of Seattle Miss June Peters, who Is visit ing in Bend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Peters, recent ly announced her engagement to Grant A. Strome, of Seattle. The wedding Is planned for next June. News ot the bptrotnal was told recently in Portland, where Miss Peters is a nurse at Veterans hos pital. Her fiance is studying pre-medics at Linfleld college, McMinnvllle.
