SEPTEMBER 23. 1 948 Plane Owners Denounce Old Models and Prices : Washington IT Max Karant has just struck a blow for the thousands who fly and those who thought they'd like to untlj they . saw the "post-war" private planes and price tags. i Karant until lately was manag ing editor' of Flying Magazine and a man given to colorful expres sions. He Is now assistant general manager of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots association, a militant group representing 30,000 fliers. In his agency's newsletter, Karant denounced the plane builders for resisting a civil aeronautics ad ministration proposal to finance development of private planes with improved safety and utility. Joseph T. Geutlng, Jr., manager or tne personal Aircran council, organization of the private plane Industry, promptly took issue. The plane people, ueutlng sam, warn the CAA to keep hands off private aircraft development. It would just produce a lot of impractical and regulatory problems, he said. Karant Reacts Let the army ground forces sponsor a development program; civilians would reap benefits, Geutting proposed. Some of Karant's reactions are printable. Max has flown 35 dif ferent planes, "always looking, hopefully, for something to indi - cate that the personal-plane, indus try is at least trying" to make use of available new developments. He has tried, he said, to think of something new adopted by a manufacturer "on his own initia tive." Karant listed the spin-proof plane and tricycle landing gear which grew out of a competition 14 years ago; the stall-warning device which insurance companies and pilots think makes flying safer; the crosswind landing gear, and the omni-di.rectional radio re ceiver. - ; Few New Planes Then he added to the list the roadable autogiro, the propeller de-icer and the spinable Piper Cub which a government agency has shown can be made spin-proof. , The only really new planes, Kar ant contended, are the Beech Bonanza and Ryan Navlon. One recently announced 1949 models, he said, is a four-seat version of a 10-year old trainer. Most mothers are the same thing, he said. Many States in Search Of Bigger Revenues Chicago Ui The Council on State Governments reporls that from one-half to two-thirds of the states will need more revenue for the next budget period thnn they have for the current one. Continued increase in expendi tures is expected in most cases because of inflated prices, defer red capital improvement projects and increased demands from local governments, the council said. It reported that 19 stales have tried to estimate the amount ot additional funds which will be needed and the estimates ranged from $2,000,000 to $102,000,000. The average youngster already has dental decay by his third birthday. 2 Adequate nutritional diet, including proper amounts of milk, eggs, meat, fruits and cer eals. 3 A minimum of concentrated sweets such as candy, gum, pop, rich pastries, Jams and Jellies. 4 Regular and careful cleans ing and brushing of teeth. 5 Topical application of so dium fluoride, a new treatment now recommended by the.
