BEND, OREGON WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1949 FAGE EIGHT Cerdan National Hero in France Paris, Sept. 22 IP Marcel Cer dan was more than ever a na tional hero today to millions of Frenchmen who passed a sleep less night to hear him acclaimed . as the new middleweight chanv pion 01 me wono.' It was four o'clock In the morn ing when the news of Cerdan's knockout of American Tony Zale at Jersey City, N. J., was flashed on the screen of a theater- in the Montmarte section. A huge crowd began a riotous celebration, cheer ing and singing the "Marsell lalse." The French radio, which never broadcasts during the early hours oi tne morning except during a national election, provided a broadcast of the fight from ring side and also scheduled two re broadcasts of the fight. ' In swanky nightclubs and plain corner cafes, the victory of tne "tiger of France was greet ed with much shouting and clink ing of glasses. People poured into the streets to discuss the fight in excited groups. Several morning newspapers rushed out special dawn editions, In Casablanca, gigantic fire works displays were touched off, Lava Bears Look . Bad in Practice The Lava Bear first team show ed up poorly in a scrimmage ses sion yesterday afternoon, Coach Hank Nilsen said this morning.. , - Backs fumbled and missed ; blocks, while linemen allowed de fensive players to get . through to smear plays. . Another good performer last night was Ron Abbot, who ac counted for considerable scrim mage yardage from the fullback position. Tonight the Bears will concen trate on defense against the Cor vallis eleven in addition to adding a few new plays to the ones they used against Redmond. Wayne L; Morse was scheduled to speak in Laweview today, and will speak in Burns and Ontario tomorrow. The senator will leave Ontario for Washington, D.C., on Friday. Next month Senator Morse will make a tour through Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Ohio and Missouri. He will talk on be half of the republican ticket.
