Those far' west and mid west states proved to be as fickle as a blonde. They let the GOP down with a thump during the early Roosevelt years. They switched around to help revive the republi can party In 1940 and 1944. A coun ty by county score of recent elec tions shows what hit the republi cans' In 1932-36 and what is likely to hit the democrats this year if the trend continues. President Truman now ls'aP' pealing to the men and women of the great open spaces. They are the same ones who had a big hand in putting the republican 80th con gress on the White House doorstep. If Truman is unable to turn the political tide in those great areas, he is licked. ' Analyze Returns "The American institute of pub lic opinion has analyzed county re turns for the four election In which Mr. Roosevelt was chosen president. The depths of republi can political depression and the extent of republican recovery are demonstrated by these figures. . Ross, secretary. Several state and county republican candidates will be speakers, and Ralph Cake, national GOP committeeman, will be present. The breakdown shows that the republican comeback was based firmly in the middle and far west, For purposes of tliLs analysis the middle west will be considered to consist of Ohio, Michigan, Indi ana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Mlnne sota, Iowa, Missouri, North Da kota, South Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas. GOP Gains There are 1,056 counties in this group of states. Running against Mr. Roosevelt In 1932, Hoover car ried onlv 121 of them. When Gov. Thomas E.' Dewey opposed Mr. Roosevelt In 1944 the republicans carried 818 of those mldwestern counties. The far western states are those of the mountain slopes and Pa cific coastal area, as follows: Mon tana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, Washington, Oregon and Cal ifornia. All but 17 of the 410 counties in that group of states went demo cratic in 1932. In 1944 the republi cans won '177 of those 410 coun ties. The furtherest the political pendulum swung, however, was in 1936, the year Alf. M. Landon of Kansas ran against Mr. Roose velt. Landon got only eight coun ies among he eight Rocky moun tain states and none from the three states of the Pacific coast. REMOVE...
