The brush maites 1,750 sweeps a minute, witfc a level that adjusts to clean naps of any thickness. Even the broom that's operated by hand has had a rejuvenation. Manufacturers have developed a broom with plastic bristles that generate static electricity to trap the dirt. ...... . . Automatic Can Opener The automatic can opener is operated by electricity and is de signed to handle any type of can. A touch of the control knob locks the can in place and starts the automatic opening. The can stays in place until you can flip the knob back to release it and shut off the motor at the same time. Another electric development that will appeal also to the man of the house is a small unit to magnetize tools for repair work. Women can use the unit to mag netize scissors for picking up pins, but the most common use will be for magnetizing screw drivers and hammers to save both thumbs and tempers. The unit plugs into any home electrical outlet. That old flooring with the rough boards and wide cracks can be covered completely with a new floor paint that claims to give a linoleum-like finish to any type of flooring. The manufactu rers say one coat can be spread thickly enough to cover cracks in floor boards and to smooth out rough surfaces. Made to use eith er inside or outdoors, the paint (pavinoleum) comes in two types for either wood or concrete and metal flooring. Home Fire Alarm A portable home fire alarm system sets off a warning that sounds like a car horn when the temperature, near one of the de tectors, is big enough to pro manufacturers say the alarm unit, equipped with eight fire de tectors, is being enough to pro tect a home up to 2,000 square feet and requires no more cur rent to operate than a large flashlight. , . . Pensylvania Governor Boasts Green Thumb Harrisburg, Pa. (IP) Two of Pennsylvania's most luxurious and well-tended gardens are kept in top condition by the experienc ed hand of Uov. James H. Duff. The governor's seven-acre pri vate gardens at his home in Car negie, Pa., are one of the state's show places. Tracts at his Indian town Gap summer, residence will yield hundreds of pounds of prod uce this season. The state's chief executive de signed most of the landscaping at his summer home and supervised transplanting of 40,000 trees' to that area. Gov. Duff offers only one piece oi aavice to oeginners. "You've got to keep on top of it," he said, "else you don't have a garden. MODEL PLANES BANNED Evanston, 111. U) Long famed for its low traffic accident rate, Evanston has taken steps to pro tect itself against another type of accident. The flying of miniature airplanes has been made illegal. T Cattle Diseases Tackled by U. S. Washington U"The govern ment soon will send a team of scientists around the country to attempt to Identify and conquer a new cattle disease, now known only as "disease X." The agriculture department said outbreaks of this "new and baffling malady" already have caused "serious losses ... of meat, milk and other animal products.-" So far. it said, the new cattle killing disease has been reported in 26 states. "All attempts to transmit the disease experimentally have been unsuccessful and numerous drug treatments on infected animals have been futile," the department said. The team of scientists, working closely with state and local gov ernments, will begin its all-out study of the disease within a few weeks. One department official said about all that is known of the dis ease at present are the general symptoms. Those include a wat ery discharge from the eyes and nose of the infected animal, loss of appetite and a thickening of the skin. Neb. m Omaha resi dents are losing their shirts and quite a little other clothing at the new self-service launderettes. A survey revealed that forgot ten items are piling up at the laundries, left there by forgetful patrons. Clothing is not the only item left behind by the' customers. A launderette manager said. ' iney leave tablecloths, towels, rugs, shirts, ladies' unmention ables, dish rags and mop heads."1 Another launderette reported that one woman overlooked a sheet in the washer. It is still un claimed. Enough clothing to outfit one person completely is found in the course of a month .at one Oma ha establishment. The operators have a hard time matching up the -articles and own ers. There is no identification on the forgotten wash and the laun derettes don't keep any record of who uses the machines. Most of the firms donate their finds to charity. But one manager said, "We keep them,', My wife hasn't had to buy anything for a long time." Fall Knitwear Available in Various Types Knitwear not only looks new and right for fall and winter but is wearable and in 'a wide range of prices and types. In machine knitted fabrics there are amazing new construc tions which take on the appear ance of tweeds either with two tone firm surfaces like shark skin or of softer appearance in plaids, checks, stripes and eponge types. Companion woolknits are carefully worked out for two piece suits the jackets in checks or stripes with the skirt using the plain background of the pat tern. Worsted jerseys return with great Importance not only due to the impetus of their use in Paris collections but in their own right. They appear in wonderful stripe combinations, printed ver sions and metallics which carry them from sportswear through the day into cocktail and dinner clothes. There is also a glint of metallic thread in some of the more tweedy machine knitted fabrics and in many of the hand loomed ones. Novelty machine knitted fab rics are worked in complicated and ingenious patterns such as a two-color tapestry design or a lacy knit three-color polka dot. mere are many stripe combina tionssome of these using silver or, gold metallic thread. Hand looming presents plenty of news not only in types of stitch but also in design and close approach to hand knitting. Outstanding in this type of knit ted wear is tne thougnt given to rally fashionable and young ideas developing clothes for size twelve and fourteen as well as the larg er sizes and also extending intd formal cocktail and dinner cos tumes. In a less expensive range are the simulated hand knits in one and two-piece dresses which are finding ready acceptance by col lege and career girls. These are best when basic in design and may be dressed up or down to fill many needs. In general the tweed knits and hard surface fabrics are used for town and country suits and dress es tailored with great perfection and detail. They have become constant traveling companions for those who know, are perfect for first fall days and light enough unaer neavy coats later on. Classic sweaters continue number one in every sweater wardrobe with fine lightweight suit sweaters also important for fall.
