HP) South Dakota republicans don't want to take any credit away from, Rep. Mar garet Chase Smith of Maine but they want the record set straight. '- Her expected -election to the U. S. senate this fall will make Mrs. Smith neither the first wom en her party ever has elected to the senate nor the first woman ever elected to that body without having been appointed to it first, they contend. Both those honors, the South Dakotans insist, belong to former Sen. Gladys Pyle of Huron, S. D. Miss Pyle was elected to a short term in the upper house of con gress In 1938 after winning the republican nomination. She re-, ceivetf the largest vote ever given for a senator from South Dakota, 155,292 votes. : . Never Took Seat Congress . was not in session during her brief term, so she nev er sat in the senate. She did, however, open an office in Wash ington and serve her state in the capacity of senator. ' Recently newspaper and maga zine articles about Mrs. Smith, who won the republican nomina tion for the senate this spring, , have said sne would be the first elected GOP woman senator. They also have credited her with being certain to become the first woman of either party elected to' the senate wltnout first having been appointed. Miss Pyle's senatorial honors were only part of a long line of firsts in South Dakota - politics. A leader in the fight for woman suffrage, she became, the first woman South Dakota ever named as a presidential elector in 1920. i First In Legislature i Two years later she became the first woman ever to sit in the South Dakota legislature. Be tween sessions she was appoint ed assistant secretary of state, thus becoming the first woman in South Dakota to be assistant to a constitutional officer ; By 1926, when she was nomf nated and elected secretary of State in her own right, she was the first woman ever to hold a constitutional office in the state. Four years later she became the first woman ever to seek the South Dakota governorship. Only by a quirk of South Dako ta law did Miss Pyle fall to win the governorship. South Dakota law, however, requires a candi date to draw 35 per cent of the primary vote, or else the contest is thrown into the party conven tion. Hard Fight Lost The 1930 republican convention wrangled for 12 ballots. Miss Pyle led in the early voting. Fin ally Warren Green received the plurality required for the nomin ation. He was elected governor that fall. A decade later Miss Pyle made a speech placing Gov. Harlan J. Bushfield in nomination for the 1940 GOP presidential nomina tion. It was the first nominating speech ever made by a woman at a major national party con vention. . ... Men's clothing fashions for fall and winter 1948 will be very much on the conservative side. That's the verdict of the men who know men's fashion trends best. Suit, topcoat and overcoat de signs, ready for the coming sea son, emphasize features borrowed from a former era of simple ele gance. Shoulders are approximate ly "natural" again. Chests have less fullness and waistlines have an easier look. More soft-construc tion tailoring is being introduced in the new models, to establish a definite 1948 trend toward more comfort in clothes. And this lm provement is enhanced by several new fabric finishes, including mothproofed wool, and a wide range of lighter weight cloths. Coordination of colors to ach ieve a complete "ensemble" effect will be strongly pointed up in the furnishings and accessories lines, built around basic gray, blue and brown shades in soft hues. Complexion Care Called Essential A romantic revival of the grace ful, ultra-feminine look of the early 1900's is being strongly en dorsed by the beauty, experts, these days. But with the careful and elegant coiffures, the new hats which aim frankly to be witch, a peaches-and-cream com plexion Is more than ever indicat ed. So before assembling your chosen cosmetic props for fall, why not embark on a regular skin-care program for post-summer reconditioning of your com plexion.. An ideal method of both cleans ing and toning the skin is the "outside-inside ' treatment, rnis treatment cleanses the outer skin and also stimulates the flow of blood from within. Here is how it works: Dip a fact cloth in pleasantly warm-to-hot water, wring it out and press It against your face. Now. while the skin Is still warm and moist, apply cold cream in little spirals, from the jaw-line right up and out to the hair-line. Remove this with tissues, and cream again. When the last creaming has been wiped away, splash on refreshingly cold water. And, as a final invigorating touch, pat on skin freshener with a cot ton pad squeezed out in com wa ter. Clean, smooth and rosy that's how your complexion will look after this "facial." Hats have narrower brims and lower crowns. Shirts are more col orful in their variety, but In sub dued effects. Some of the new ties are bright with color and bold in pattern, but most of the new ef fer lngs show "quieter" designs than seen for several seasons. Bus iness and dress-up shoes are al most severely plain, but sports models show interesting new de partures, with heavy shapes, straps and buckles, rubber soles and heels and smart embellish ments. Predictions are that rich woolen tweeds, for both .suits and top coats, will be back in prominence on the fashion front this fall and winter in new light weights. Practical, smooth-finished worst ed fabrics will likely continue as 1 too fabric favorites among suits, according to the style experts. And you'll have a wider choice of fabrics and patterns man lor a long time. Topcoat news centers around a revival of raglan sleeve and Bal- macaan designs. These will be available in handsome wool tweeds with "classic" checked and plaid patterns as well as the ever popular plain weaves. Semi-fitted and box coat styles are recom mended for town wear. And an enormous demand is reported for wool gabardine coats because of their versatility as both raincoats and topcoats. New overcoat models are gener ally "dressier" and lighter in weight. Many are longer, with modified shoulder lines and straight, free-hanging b a c ks. Forecasts indicate tnai navy Diue will again be the most popular overcoat color. Fabric choices in clude fleeces, Whitney cloth, cheviots and tweeds. The 3-button model has been re vived in sports jackets made In an easy-fitting "sacK style. Many oi these have a slight flared effect at the hip and are cut longer, color ings and design effects are plain and softened marking a trend to ward tan, medium brown and lo vat shades. Snorts slacks are designed to harmonize with the new sports iackets. These are light in weight and some are narrower in the lees. Favored fabrics are flannels, gabardines and piaio-patternea worsteds. i Formal wear is being more widely used again and fashion pace-setters are snowing a preier ence for the double-breasted mod el with satin-faced lapels in dinner jackets, and the tail coat with sat in-faced lapels and a higher waist line.
