I Stocks Lowest Since Early April New York, Sept. 20 llPi A new crisis in the relations between Moscow and the western powers brought active selling into stocks today and the industrial group reached a new low since early April as losses extended to more than 2 points. wail street was worriea over the possibility that the pending western power appeal to the Unit ed Nations in the Benin impasse might seriously weaken or even break up the new world organiza' tlon lor peace. Trading quickened as stocks sold off, always a bad sign to Wall street Drofesslons. The market started on a steaay note but toward the end of the first hour selling was noted and offerings Increased as the day progressed. Near the close activity slacken ed slightlv but the list was not able to make any appreciate comeback from its lows. North Unit Water To Be Cut Oct. 5 Madras. Sent. 20 (Special) October 5 has been the deadline set for running irrigation water In the canals. Harold Eldemlller, secretary of the Jefferson Water Conservancy district, explained this week. If there is no aemana for water, the move might come even earlier, he said. The definite date was arrived uDon by the directors of the irri gation district so that 1800 feet of the canal at Bend can be lined before bad weather sets in. The section of the canal to be lined is cut through solid rock, but here is leakage through crevices. Ellis (UnlUM l'rnui Saienctt writer) New York iipi A plastic Iron lung that may save the lives of many infantile paralysis patients nas Deen developed by scientists at Yale university. The conventional iron lung now in use is neavy, bulky and dint cult to move from one location to another. The Yale version, how ever, is light and when in com mercial production may be trans ported in a suitcase. Further more, it is cheap to build, the Yale scientists said. The croup includes Dr. Harold Lamport, research associate In physiology, and Dr. Ralph D. Eichorn. Dr. Lamport first con ceived the idea as a result of his work at Yale during the war on the pneumatic lever suit, an lm proved type of "anti-G" suit now increasingly worn to prevent blackout of pilots of fighter planes maneuvering at high alti tude and speeds. Same Principle Used Dr. Lamport said the new typa respirator employs the same prin ciple of operation as the iron lung. When the muscles for res piration are paralyzed, as In polio, life can be sustained by subject ing the patient to rhythmic nega tive pressure all over the body, except lor tne neaa. For weeks, Dr. Lamport and his associates experimented and found that a cylinder can be suf ficiently rigid to serve as a respir ator, even though it is composed of light weight rubberized cloth, or pliable plastic sheeting so that It can be folded compactly into a suitcase for storage or trans portation. The Yale model is 32 Inches long and weighs less than two pounds. In structure, it is some thing like a thermos flask, with air-tight inner and outer walls, which sustain air pressure be tween them. Tried on Animals Dr. Lamport said the mode of evacuating the air - supported chamber to induce rhythmic res piration need not be different in BEND'S "BETTER HOME FINDERS" $16,500 New ranch type home. If desired, y he said, a double-walled : dia- , phragm or bellows can be driven by air pressure alone Instead of by the usual electric motor. : The Yale model has been tried on animals and Is not yet ready for human use.
