Casey's no dope. Hafey came b k to work after a honeymoon a i wasn't scheduled to leave the d gout. But in the seventh Sacra RMfito came from behind with six runs to tie up the game. That's wnen Casey said, "Will, hit one out of the park for the little wom an." 1 The resulting blast, with Merrll Combs on base, netted the Acorns an 8 to 6 decision over the Sacs, thaJrsixth straight victory. j Seals Also Win Meanwhile, San Francisco man aged to maintain a half game edge aa young Cornelius Dempsey let the Seattle Rainiers down with four hits to hurl the Seals to a 7 to 3 triumph. The Oaks were lead- ng 4-a at this point where pitcher ipn Buxton put tar on the ball, so they have a good chance of picking up a game. It was agreed that Oak- nd and Sacramento will play their scheduled Sept. 21 game on Sept. 20, thus leaving the Oaks tfee on the 21st to meet the Seals fst prior to a game between San ancisco and Seattle. Tour Marshall-Wells Store By Jack Cuddy (United Trent Sport Writer) New York, Sept. 10 tU'i Bill Meyer's success with the Pirates this season contradicts the base ball axiom that a manager is only as good as his material. This rookie pilot took a tail- end club that had been question ably rebuilt by the addition of cast-offs and untested freshmen, and he guided the nondescript out- lit through one of the hottest pennant races in National league history to the challenger's rung, which it occupies today. Pittsburghs 6 to 1 victory over the Reds yesterday loft the Cor sairs only three games behind the leading Braves and one-half game ahead of the third-place Dodgers. if Meyer can boost tils Pirate3 to the pennant, he will be the first manager in modern major league history to achieve the top with a club that finished last or tied for last the year be- lore, ino pnoi nas lurnea Tne trick since 1900. Wind Up Last Under Manager Billy Herman last season the Pirates wound up in a last-place deadlock with the Phillies. During that campaign, chunky, gray-haired Meyer was managing Kansas City . of the American association. Because of the Corsair's dis mal showing in '47, and because of their uncertain "new look" aft er the off-season "rebuilding," most baseball writers figured the club would be lucky to climb to fifth place in '48. But the writers hadn't reckon ed on Meyer's genius in handling pitchers and his ability to Inspire a club to play "over Its head." Play Good Ball The Pirates have played good ball all season; and since Aug. 1 they've been going at a .676 pace, winning 25 while losing 12. That's a remarkable accomplishment for a club that doesn't boast a single .300 hitter and whose starting pitchers include such "elder statesmen" as Elmer Riddle, Er nie Bonham, Fred Ostermueller and Rip Sewell. Meyer solved his pitching prob lem by letting the oldsters take plenty of rest between starts a week If necessary. Bill rejected suggestions that he make an outfielder of rookie Bob Chesne3, tne 3150,000 pitch ing "beauty" from San Francisco, who appeared very unlovely early In tne season. Ana cnesnes re warded Bill's confidence by be coming ace of the mound staff, with 12 victories and four de feats. He changed Kirby Hlgbe from an uncertain starter to one of the most dependable relief hurlers In the circuit.
