The pressure is all on the Yanks because the Red Sox now hold a game-and-a-half lead.' Third-place Cleveland, four-and-a-half games off the pace, opens a three game series at De troit in another night game. Today's action in the National league won't be quite as hectic with Boston's pacemaklng Braves ond the third-place Brooklyn Dodgers enjoying a day off. The second-p'ace Pirates attempt to tighten their hold on that slot in a night game at Cincinnati. The only action in the majors yesterday was in the National and the outstanding development was the Pirates' seizure of sec ond place by a half-percentage point over idle Brooklyn. Pirates Win Fritz Ostermueller hurled the Pirates to a 6 to 2 night win over the St. Louis Cards at Pittsburgh. He lost his shutout in the ninth inning when Don Lang homered with Stsn Musial aboard. The Pirates completed a triple pit y. their second of the year, in the fist inning. Al Schoendienst had led off with a walk for the Cards and he moved to second on Marty .Marlon's single. Musial lined a 3 and 2 pitch to shor'r.too Stan Rojek, who stepped on sec ond and threw to Johnny Hnpp at fit for ihe triple kill. Wallv Westlake hit his 16th homer for the Pirates in the . Off.) By Jack Cuddy (United Press SurU Writer) New York, Sept. 8 U'.' As the flag-defending Yankees Invaded Boston today to plunge into the stretch fight for their eighth American league pennant in 13 years, Manager Bucky Harris hoped that help from rookies Hank Bauer and Bob Porterfleld would provide the difference be tween victory and defeat. Outfielder Bauer from the Kan sas City farm made a successful major league debut In Monday's doubleheader against the Athle tics; and Harris announced that the youngster would be in the Une-up tonight at Boston as the significant three-game series opened. Porterfleld to Hurl Harris announced also that Por terfleld, the young right-hander recently brought in from Newark, would be one of the three start ing pitchers against the Red Sox. Since his arrival, Porterfield has been credited with four victories and-oTie defeat. Bauer, who batted .305 with Kansas City, will be used against either right-handed or southpaw pitching. The injection of his right-handed clouting into the line-up, means the benching of Charlie Keller for the first time without injury since King Kong started with the Yankees in 1939. Keller's spinal operation during the off season and his broken hand in June seems to have de prived him of his power. Keller made 21 hits in 101 trips since he returned to the line-up in early August. Against southpaw pitching, Harris' outfield will be Johnny Lindell, left; Joe DiMaggio, cen ter, and Bauer replacing Yogi Berra in right. Against righties, the gardners will tie Bauer, left; DiMaggio, center, and Berra, right. Gets Four Hits Bauer sold Harris on his ability Monday when he got four hits, drove in two runs and stole a base during the doubleheader. Harris believes that the Yanks must win two of the three games in the current series in order to have a reasonable chance of beating out Joe McCarthy's Bosox Harness Racing Is Flop at Fair State Fairgrounds, Salem, Sept. 8UB Harness racing was a flop at Lone Oak track here Tuesday, fair officials said today.
