Stocks Record
General Drop
New York, Sept. 8 ipa long
list of adverse domestic and for
eign news Items sent the stock
market down l to 3 points in
light volume today.
Sentiment, built up in the pre
vious session by glowing predic
tions for the market's future was
dampened today by talk of a' new
cold war crisis on the eve of the
Paris meeting of the United Na
tions general assembly; by the
trench cabinet crisis; Russian
air activity in the U. S. air cor
ridor; and a spread of labor dis
turbances at home.
The only favorable item the ex
perts saw today was the market's
dullness which indicated no fear
selling. Instead there was a lack
of buying and prices slowly erod
ed. Closing prices were around
the worst of the session with rails
leading the decline. Theu- weak
ness added to the distress of the
trading element which had look
ed for leadership on an advance
by this group.
Highest grade stocks were the
widest losers although t,o,.
were a few specials which were
. hit, notably preferreds. Mean-

Moving-Belt
Takes Pushcarts
Out of Shopping
Rahway. N. J. 'HP' Four broth
ers who have been in the neigh
borhood food business here for 22
years are planning o new "super
duper" market that may m:ike
the grpcery store pushcart vanish
from the American scene like
the horse and the Indian.
Early this month they plan to
open the first store using the
new "So-E-Z system" invented by
Mollis Wooten, Memphis radio
executive. It uses a system of
belts moving along counter tops
to carry the items selected py
the housewife and marked with
an identifying number.
The four Dembling brothers,
Benjamin, David, Bernard and Ir
ving, are planning to open the
store in a 38 by 50 building now
under construction. - They believe
that they can operate it without
additional help.
How It Works
Here is the way the system
operates:
A housewife enters the store
and selects from a rack a pencil
stamped with 4 number. She
shops through the store, selecting
her items, writes the same num
ber as is on her pencil on the
price tag of each item and places
it on the moving belt.
The system of moving belts Is
simple. One belt reaches along a
center counter the entire length
of the store from the meat mar
ket in the rear to the checking
counter in front. Other belts feed
onto it from right angles at con
venient distances along the room.
Clerk Checks Up
The items . selected by the
housewife are carried along the
belts to the checking counter,
where a clerk picks them up and
places them in a bin bearing the
same number as the shopper's
pencu. tie removes tne num
bered price tags and DUts them
on a spike- for rapid adding
when the housewife has complet
ed her shopping.
Buffons of Red, While, Blue
Dominate Political Campaign
Chicago dpi The odds are
three-toone that no matter who
the next president Is, his cam
paign buttons will lie red, white
and blue, a big badge manufac
turer reports.
The Green Duck Metal Stamp
ing company says it is the na
tion's biggest maker of colored
metal campaign badges and but
tons. It plans this year to put
30,000,000 pin-on election pleas.
"We have orders from republi
cans, democrats, dixiecrats and
progressives," Donald Moeberg,
the firm's sales manager, said.
"For all but one, the colors are a
traditional red, white and blue."
He tossed one' button tin his
desk which read "States Rights
Democrats." It was in the ap
proved colors but had twostars
as well.
"The stars are well liked by
everybody," he said.
Dewey Conforms
From the drawer, Moeberg
pulled another metal button.
"I'm on the Dewey Team," It said.
It was red, white and blue.
"We haven't got any of the
bulk of our usual democratic or
ders yet," Moeberg said. "They're
a little slower this year than
usual.
"They might put a picture of
the White House on a blue back
ground. The White House al
ways has been a favorite with
the democrats, On it, they might
say, 'Truman's Terrific' or some
thing like that in red letters. That
way, they'll get in the red. white
and blue."
When the democrats place their
orders the Green Duck plant will
run 21 hours a day, Moeberg said.
The pin-on kind is the fuvorlte
now.
"When things really get hot
about September," he said, "all of
the parties order a little clip type
that Just makes fast to the coat
lapel.
Only One Exeeplton
"Of course it goes without say
ing they'll probably be red, white
and blue, too."
Moeberg reminisced q minute
about how there always is bound
to be n little variety "in the. but
tons, though, which was why the
odds this yeaj- were three-toone
Instead of four-to-nothing on red,
white and blue.
"There were yellow and brown
Lanuon sunflowers in 1936," he
said, "and ...
He pulled a good sized button
out of the desk.
"Win With Wallace," it urged
in white and blue only.
Ear-Pull Faucets Rigged
For Kitchen Sink
Evansville, Ind. Ul'i Victor Bar
nett thinks kitchen plumbing
needs novelty treatment.
Barnett has a patent pending on
a water tap for the kitchen sink.
The faucet is metal cast in the
shape of an animal's head. Pull
down the left ear, you get hot wa
ter. Yank the right, cold water.
You can have most any kind of
animal you want, Barnett says.
But the ones with the biggest ears
are the handiest, such as the jack-
rabbit and the donkey.
