SEPT- 3. 1948 Heavy Twoa-Day ' The Lava Bear football team Will continue its two-a-day prac tice sessions through Monday, ac cording to Hank Nilsen, head coach, and then move into a regu lar afternoon drill session on .Tuesday. The coaches will continue to stress conditioning for several more days, along with individual position play. However, offen sive backfield and line combina tions will start working on plays almost immediately. Nearly all positions on the team are still "wide open," and will go to the boys who show up in the next J wo weeks -of practice, Nilsen dded. Many Young Flayers I The Bear roster includes a ' cumber of young players, up Jfrom Russ Acheson's 1947 Cub squad. Many of these are expect ed to develop rapidly throughout ihe season. Transfers from oth er schools have also added some strength. The club roster now numbers 56 , candidates and is expected to . increase slightly when school jets under way on Tuesday. Grahlman tied for first in a sweepstakes event at the Bend Golf club yesterday afternoon. Each scored 40 points. Bill Hatch was third with 38 points and Art Hill was close be hind with 37 points. 'Sealo' Figures In Regatta Wins Del Staples, Bend yachtsman, skippered his snipe "Sealo" to victory in the annual regctta of the Elk Lake Yacht club held Sunday, August 29. The "Sealo," piloted by Alfred Nentel with Staples as crew, also won the nov ice race in the snipe class. Following close behind the win ner In the novice race came runner-up Carl Wyatt of Bend sail np Ed Knight's "Flit," while "Possa Missa" with Melvln Sau ers as skipper and Raymond Howard as crew was not far be hind In third place. . In the second race the regular skippers took over their boats and he novices shipped out as crew. Staples and Nentel captur ed a close first place from Ray mond Howard, Sr., and his son, Ray, while Carl Wyatt and Mel vin Sauers on the "Flit" were a close third. The open class had only two boats competing as did the cat- boat and canoe classes. In the novice race Jim Hosmer and Sam Peoples brought their skimming dish "Punkin" Seed" across the finish line ahead of Raymond Brown and son, Willis, in their flattie, appropriately named "Swish." Leonard Peoples tacked the "Wild Kitten" In ahead of Ted Meagher's "Festina Lente" in both races to capture the cat boat awards. . A double victory was alsb scored by Mrs. A,, A. Pfachaer""ln the canoe races as she twice edged out Paul Hosmer, Jr., to garner first place awards over the shorter canoe course. Willis Brown and. "Chip", Rals an out-maneuvered their rival, the "Punkin" Seed" with Hosmer and Peoples on board, to win the senior event of the open class race and thereby gain possession of the Van Vleet trophy awarded to the winners of the snipe and open class races. Staples won the trophy for his victories in the snipe class. Each man keeps the award for six months, then re turns It to have it awarded again next year. : The races were watched by several score visitors from the shoreline who cheered their fav orites on enthusiastically. In one particularly good wind Sam Peoples was toppled into the chilly waters when the jib sheet broke as he was hang ing far out over the edge of the "Punkin' Seed." He was quick to get back on board, though, and the boat finished the race. Following the races, the yacht club members and their guests enjoyed a picnic supper and ban quet at the noma of retiring Com modore and Mrs. A. A. Pfaender. The race results were announced by Ray Peoples, head of the race committee, and the Van Fleet trophy was awarded to Staples and Willis Brown by Commodore Pfaender. Newly-elected officers of the club were Introduced also. They are: Raymond Brown, Port land, commodore; Del Staples, vice-commodore, and Carl Wyatt, secretary-treasurer.
