. WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 25, PAGE EIGHT .THE BEND BULLETIN. BEND. OREGON Sprinkler Irrigation Wins Favor in Midstate; F. F. A. Boy Reviews Installations By Frank Dossor (Redmond future Farmer) Sprinkling, an Improved meth od of irrigation, was first started in southern California two years ago, but it did not become popular until the present decade. In the past few years, sprinkling has been adopted on a number of Cen tral Oregon farms. The results 01 the installed systems are recew ing wide attention, and Interest Is apparently growing, it is my priv ilege to review for The Bulletin some of the information 1-have gathered in connection with: my studies.; '. 1 There are two types of sprink ler irrigation. One type ha the pipe burled in the groundand made permanent. In the "other type the pipe is laid on top of the ground and is moved. This latter type is. made of light aluminum pipe which can be moved quickly and easily from setting to setting. This system consists of a light weight portable-pipe lino with rotary sprinklers mounted on it at intervals of 40 to 60 feet. Spacing them 40 feet apart, they lap each other a little over half with the result that a ectangular strip ahout 50 . feet wide is watered. When one strip is sufficiently Irri gated, the entire sprinkler line is 1 moved and another 60 foot strip is watered. This system is again moved another 60 feet and so on across the field. V Sources Mentioned ? Water for sprinkler irrigation can be obtained from lakes, rivers, streams, man-made ponds, wells, and irrigation ditches. . - There are three types of pumps. They include the electric, which, with a 7V4 horse power engine, will pump 300 gallons per minute up to the 150 h.p., capacity 1400 gallons per minute. The 10 h.p. gas pump will pump about 300 gallons per minute. The dlesel is the other type, but it is seldom used because it would not be econ omical on a small acreage. A person can install a sprinkler system and be sprinkling in 2 or 3 hours if all equipment needed is at a centralized points ' , , Irrlgdtionists usually use 4 inch pipe for the main line and 3 inch pipe for-the laterals. Two inch pipe is used when the laterals are very long. . , ' - Equipment needed when instal ling a sprinkler system includes the pump, pipe, sprinklers, valves, connection, flexible pipe suction set and other miscellaneous equip ment. When taking tne water from irrlgatlop ditches, dams should be made Jit the ditches ut .different Intervals. Another way, is to build a 4 by 4 box a few feet from the ditch and put In a screen to keep the dirt out of the box. This way the box will be full of water all the time and thus pre-1 'vent air pockets In the pump, r Models Described I . The smallest sprinkler, the mod-! el M, will cover from Td to so leei with from 20 to 50 pounds pres sure. The model 40, the medium size sprinkler, will cover from 82 to 127 feet with 26 to 60 pounds .nressure. The largest, the model 70, will cover from 90 to 171 feet, which has proved to be the best. There are approximately 114 dif ferent types of sprinklers. Sprinklers which are 40 ieet apart will give 3 inches of water in 5 hours. The sprinklers put on about 610 Inches per hour, though it depends on the size of the nozzle. Different crops which can be raised under this system are can nery crops, flax, suger beets, corn, onions, berries, fruits, vegetables, grain, potatoes, alfalfa, clover, irrigated pastures, nursery crops, and score's of others too numerous to mention. . Advantages Told Advantages are: time and labor saved, no erosion, uniform and complete irrigation, Irrigation over any kind of ground, ground made easier to work. Terry Isaac son of Terrebonne has 40 acres under the sprinkler irrigation and he said, "With the amount of sur face water I use on 40 acres, I could ; sprinkle' the rest of my ranch, which has 120 acres, with the sprinkler system." Thus, you can see from Mr. Isaacson's ac count that you can irrigate about three times as much land with sprinklers with the same amount of water used on 40 acres if under surface irrigation. Another advantage is the low cost of operation. It costs approxi mately $2.50 annually on an elec tric system for repair costs on an electric pump. The cost of a gas pump is only the gas and 611. ' The cost of Installing a sprink ler system on 3 acres is approxi mately , $1,000 Including pump, pipe,,, and all other necessary equipment. To install on 40 acres it costs about $1400, everything in cluded, 1;' ' ' ( ..,(.'.' '. I have worked over two years on, a permanent sprinkler system and am going to set up a 'sprink ler system on my own place. Therefore, I interviewed different farmers, who had light pipe sys tems, to find out advantages as w;ell as the disadvantages because no system can be perfect. Some of the disadvantages were that when a person has 40 acres under sprinklers and 30 acres under ditch, besides all the other work, It takes time and labor. Richards Farm Studied An example of light pipe irri gation system is that of Hod Rich ards, 6n a 25 acre farm near Bend. When Mr. Richards used surface Irrigation he had only enough water for 9 acres. He changed to sprinkler irrigation and with the same amount of water now irri gates 9 acres 61 alfalfa, 13 acres of wheat and oats, and 3 acres of potatoes. With this system ho was able to Irrigate over land too hilly and rolling for ditches. His system Includes an electric pump, 500 feet of 4 inch main line, and 700 feet of 3 inch portable lateral. His big advantage is that he can change the water and go away and do other work while irrigat ing. For 35 cents and one setting of laterals, he can put 2 inches of water on 1 15 acres of land. It costs $2.50 annually for operating costs. . "A sprinkler system today might mean a profitable farm to morrow!" " FOR 24-HOUR SERVICE if s the SUPERIOR CAFE . . .
