In the foreground is one of the tractor-drawn desaging out fits demonstrated. The demonstration was on the Elder brothers place near Valley Falls. Wheatland plow appears to work effectively in any season. These plows, disc tiller or harrow plows have become the most commonly used types for sage brush eradication on range lands. Plowing, harrowing with pipe harrows and eradication of sage by railing were demonstrated. Use of road rippers, rollers, grad ers, growing, mowing and flood ing were discussed. Fire Use Demonstrated Eradication through the use of fire was discussed and demon strated, and advantages and dis advantages of this method were reviewed. Flame throwers were employed in starting fires in the demonstration area, around which fire lines had been constructed. The Lakeview Rotarians' range reseeding demonstration was started as a local affair, but news rapidly spread and delegations were present from practically all tne western states. The demon strations were held on the Chand ler brothers ranch, at Valley Falls, adjacent to the Fremont highway. : " . Clonn Chairman Tea Conn,. Lakeview, was gen eral chairman of the demonstra tions, in which four agencies, Ore. gon State college, soil conserva tion service, bureau of land man agement and forest service, par ticipated. Equipment was as sembled from several states. Members of the technical ad visory committee were Walter Holt, Portland, manager of the Pacific International Livestock exposition; J. E. Pechanic, Port land, chief of range research for the Pacific northwest forest and range experiment station; E. R. Jackman crops specialist, Oregon State college; Waldo R. Frand sen, Portland,, soil conservation service, and L. R. Nadeau, Portland,'- representing the bureau of land management, department of interior. Before viewing the desaging demonstrations, the group in spected a field of crested wheat, on the Lloyd Chandler place east of Fremont highway. This crest ed wheat had been planted in an area from which sagebrush had been removed. Editor Has Good Reason For Missing Deadline v Williamsport, Ind. illi The weekly Williamsport Review-Republican went to press a day late. Herbert Cripe, the editor, and his wife were moving into their newly-built home when the stork left them a six-pound boy. Mrs. Cecile T. Odle, Mrs. Cripe's mother, died. Cripe motored to a distant hos pital to inform his wife's father1 of the death. On the way, the automobile was in a wreck and was badly damaged. Efforts Under Way to Control Forest Lightning Sandpolnt, Ida., Aug. 25 UP) Man Is attempting to conquer lightning in experiments this summer in north Idaho's Kanl ksu national forest. The U. S. forestry service and General Electric Co. teamed up to see if lightning, the chief en emy of the forests, can be stopped at its source by destroying storm clouds with dry ice. If successful, the experiments may prove to be the most impor tant single development ever un dertaken in preventing forest fires, according to forestry serv ice officials. . 'me experiments using a for estry service C-47 plane, plan to seed forming clouds with dry Ice pellets. The supercooled, water droplets In the upper part of the cloud will then turn into tiny snowflakes, most of them indi vidual snow crystals. Their fine ness will prevent their falling as rain. Hope to Dispel Clouds It is hoped that most of the crystals will drift away and the cloud will disappear instead of de veloping into a towering cumulus cloud which generates lightning. The unusual experiments are under way In the Priest river val ley at a branch of the northern Rocky mountain forest and range experiment station. In charge are H. T. Gisborne of the experiment " station and Dr. Vincent J. Schaefer of GE's research laboratory. Schaefer dls-1 covered how to make ral'i with dry. ice, and Gisbonc contacted him to see if dry ice could be used in fighting forest fires. . The actual experiment of de stroying clouds awaits a proper combination of conditions. It will be tried when separate storm clouds are building up over three selected "bleeding" spots in the valley. When that happens, one clnud will be seeded and the others left alone to determine what the dry ice can do.
