The laboratory pooh-poohed the belief that it's necessary to cut off a gila monster's head before Its Jaws can be freed when it bites a victim. Just slit either side of the lizard's Jaw and it will re lax It's grip. Another way Is to hold a lighted match under the lizard's belly and It will soon let go. The lizards seldom cause death. Only the largest have enough venom to kill a person. EASY ENJOYABLE PROFITABLE BUSINESS Kalse lite valuable Brevlcamlnta Chinchillas, the rarest ami most expensive fur In existence. ' Alcoholic Drinks May Cool; Relaxing' s Best, By Leo Turner (United I'remi Staff Corroaiionilent) New York (IPi The trouble is, Miss Adeline Wasserman con tends, that too many people are working up a sweat trying to im prove on J. W. Gent's recipe for keeping cool. The blue-eyed Miss Wasserman has 1,000 reasons, all of them al coholic, why men should not be grouchy on a hot afternoon. She's the boss on the 35th floor of the Empire State Building of a 3,000 volume library on liquor. She picked up a yellow, fragile copy of Gent's "Vinetum Britan nicum," published on Nov. 23, 1675, in London. "The cherry Is a most innocent fruit," Gent advised the people of London, "and rarely hurts any one unless eaten in too great a nuantitv. The wine made of them Is very pleasant and proper wine lor the summer season, cooling, strengthening and, stirs up a good appetite for meat.' , "Lots to Learn There's a lot to learn in Miss Washerman's library. The Arabs discovered the art of distilling, but their Moslem religion pre vented them from distilling any thing stronger than water. Irish priests blamed the 1316 famine on soldiers drinking aqua vitae (Irish whisky) dining Lent. Duncan Forbes was given the privilege of distilling whisky duty free on the tanrony of Ferrentnnl, Scotland, by William III in lu'.iu. Scottish soldiers introduced whis ky to England. The first whisky was distilled In America by Aaron Putnam on Jan. 29, 1791. The American spoil Inor became whiskey. Then came mass production of summer coolers. Another Recipe "The Complete Grocer," printed In 1832 by John H. Turnoy In New York, offers this Utile Item: "Take 34 gallons of pure while rum, 32 pounds of common brown sugar, half an ounce of the oil of wormwood, one gill of uleoatol. a little ground cinnamon, six nut megs and one quart of lime juice; make your sugar nlto syrup, kill your oil by heating It in a mortar with the alcohol and spirits of wine with a few lumps of loaf sugar, steep the nutmegs, strain them and add to the other ingre dients and color it green." "The Flowing Bowl," publish ed by William Schmidt, New York, 1S91, has this one known as "William's Summer Cooler." "In a very long class cut the juice of two limes, a spoonful of i powdered sugar, a good dash of seltzer; dissolve this well; one, pony of Santa Cruz rum, one j glass of California claret; mix j this; fill your glass with ice, or-1 nament with slices of orange and 1 pineapple and ice cream and top off with strawberries or other berries in season." . Phono 1132 Oregon Expert Says "The best way to keep cool," said Miss Wasserman, "is Just relax."
