THURSDAY, AUGUST 12, 194, t AGE SIX Tobin to Accept Cabinet Post From Truman Washington, Aug. 12 Ui President Truman's two-month search for a secretary of labor ended today with Maurice J. Tob- in's announcement that- he will accept the cabinet post. Truman was expected to give the former Massachusetts gover nor a recess appointment today. Tobin will come here from Bos ton tomorrow to make plans for tamng over his new Job. The 47-year-old Tobin succeeds Lewis B. Schwellenbach who died In June. ! Truman first sent Tobin's nom ination to the senate last Satur day. But no action was taken, so the president must make a recess appointment, good until the next session or congress. leaves Race In deciding to acceDt the $15, 000-a-year cabinet position, Tobin withdrew from the democratic gubernatorial race In his home state. He explained that he had hesl tated to accept the labor depart ment post because of his desire "to weigh carefully my obliga tions to the people of Massachus etts who have honored me during mv public career." He said, however, that Truman had given him "a call for service to our country" which "no patri otic American could refuse . . . without a compelling reason." Spokesmen for organized labor commended Tobin's decision. While in Washington earlier this week, the secretary - designate came out for repeal of the Taft Hartley labor act. This is the No. 1 plank in labor's legislative plat form for the next congress.
