West Side Nine
Gets Third Win
Nobody would have believed it.
but after one of the tightest
games in the Bend Softball asso
ciation s two-year history, west
Side Tavern had powered its way
to its, tnird win in tnree nights,
their 'fourth in a row, and the urv
disputed Independent league lead'
ershlp. And further still, West
Side's latest victims were the
. league's number one team in the
first half, the Cashmans Sham
rocks who went down fighting as
west side came from behind to
win, 2-1.
In yesterday evening's Indus.
trial league game, the Jaycees
threw that league Into a conglom
eration of facts and figures as
they topped previously unbeated
Medo-Land by a wide margin, n-z,
on Lcs Schwab's neat three-hitter.
Slate's Nine Wins
In Junior league play, Slate's
assured themselves of at least a
first place tie In ,tho second half
by dumping City Cleaners in a
game that saw the strikeout rec
ord tied and then broken, z-i,
If there was ever a Cinderella
team. West Side Tavern is it.
Glance "at their first half record
and then at their second half
same, and you'll find it's just a
matter of new players. However,
West Side is now playing with ex
actly the same lineup they did in
the first half with the exception
of Jack Gordon at stortstop. In
West Side's first Ignominious
half, they won exactly no games
while losing eight, ftow they load
the Independent league and are
assured of at least a tie for the
second half championship. Their
last game will be with the Palace
Billiards. -
The big difference for West
Side Is George Dorr, shortstop
turned pitcher. He changed from
being one of the best fielding and
hitting shortstops in the league to
a pitcher and he is undoubtedly
the finest fielding pitcher In
either league.
liCashman's got to him for three
hits and one run in the third
frame as West Side played the
Inning of their lives to keep the
runs scored down to a minimum
After that Dorr and mates gave
up Just three hits, all in separate
frames for a total of six hits
West Side, playing their third
game in three nights, came from
behind to score two times on two
hits and two Cashman errors.
Two were out when the rally
started.
The Jaycees haven't given up
hope of winning the second half
crown yet, slugging their way to
an easy win over Medo-L,and
creamery. The Industrial league's
five teams are all in a position to
win the second half now, with
every team having Just one loss.
Gets Ilonier
Jaycee first baseman Crouch
clouted a two-run homer In the
first inning to give the winners a
lead which was never tnreaienea,
Schwab's no-hitter was ruined In
the fifth, and his shut-out was
ruined in the sixth on his own mis
Dlav.
The industrial league tut tea-
the first, game pitcher Chuck
Mills. 16-year-old youngster, had
suffered. He had won three
straight games.
11 Men struck uut
Andy Anderson broke the
strikeout record of Slate's Tom
Ray and the Jaycees' Darst by
setting 11 men down via strikeout
in the live Innings. The previous
record of 10 was again tied by
Ray. Each pitcher struck out the
side twice.
Slate's won the battle in the
first inning by scoring two runs
on one hit and two bases on balls,
although Anderson only gave up
three during the entire game, city
could only come back for one
tally, getting that in the second
on a base on balls and two errors.
As a matter of fact, that game
should still be raging, as neither
team had an earned run and notn
Anderson and Ray pitched one-hit
ball games.
This evening. Superior Cate
will be out to protect the possi
bility they have of winning the
second half Independent league
crown, being pitted against Chllds
Hardware.

More Interesting things happened
in the Pacific Coast league last
night than a poor sports writer
could possibly put in the first
paragraph, regardless ol what
the rule book says.
tor instance:
1. A freak single that hit the
base runner It should have scored
choked off an Oakland rally in
the ninth inning to give the San
Francisco Seals a 1 to 0 victory
over the Acorns and lengthened
tlie seal lead to three games.
I. L,os Angeles collected 12
runs In the third inning, but it
was barely enouch as the Angels
outlasted Hollywood, 14 to 8, in a
ing mathematically dropped from
any possible chance at the title.
In the Junior league the Jay
cees will play Gregg's Bakery in
an "it doesn't matter much In
league standings" game, which
will start promptly at 6:30.
