PRIDAY, JULY 30, 1948 THE BEND BULLETIN. BEND, OREGON PAGE NINE mm gebrush Land Reclamation to Be Demonstrated Lof becoming the most signill w movement in the history of ?tern stock raising is getting Xr way in Lake county, in the Kview Rotary club's program encourage rangeland owners nrivate, state and federal to liar off the sagebrush and plant hardy perennial grasses. The club's project was aimed at the wholesale reseedlng of the sage covered desert lands in Lake county. There is about 2 Si mil lion acres of this, most of it own ed by the federal government (forest service, soil conservation service, Taylor grazing service); but many thousands of acres are owned by the state and sheep and cattle raisers. Already the local project has drawn the attention of large stockmen outside of this county, and even outside the state. The Rotary club's end of the program is, first, to put on an all-day demonstration of sage clearing and seeding methods, to be held August 19 at the Elder brothers ranch at Valley Falls, 20 miles north of Lakeview. Stockmen, soils and crops experts, and pub lic officials from all over Oregon have been invited, and invitations 93 HtUer't SRS is good In "V weather. Its 93 proof means that it goes farther. Recall Lush Grass When white men first came to Lake county, they found the des ert country covered with lush grasses, and sagebrush was found only along the washes and marginal areas. The grass, how ever, disappeared in the face Of over-grazing and drouths. As the grass disappeared, the sage mov ed out over the land. Seeding among the sagebrush has been tried, but this Is not ef fectual because the land, dry des ert by nature, has all it can do to support the sagebrush. So the orusn must first be removed. The problem affects many mil lions of acres throughout the west. Range clearing and seedine is no longer an experiment. Exper iments have been conducted on small lots for years by the forest service, Taylor grazing service, agricultural colleges and other agencies. They have now determ ined which grasses are best for dry land ranges. experiments in eround DreDar- ation have been made, too. These include burning apparatus and disc plows to remove the sage. lo Encourage Projects The Rotarv club's nroiect. then. is actually to bring the known facts of. range clearing and seed ing to tne attention oi the land owners and public officials in or der to encourage wholesale proj ects in returning the lands to greater grazing efficiency. With T. R. Conn, Lakeview at torney, as chairman, and State representative Burt K. Snyder, Lakeview insurance man as co chairman of its range committee, the Rotary club is working close ly with a five-man state advlsdry eommmittee . which consists of Walter Holt, Portland, manager of the Pacific International Live stock exposition; E. R. Jaekman, Corvallis. Ore. extension special ist at Oregon State college; J. E. Peehanic, Portland,, chief, range division, Pacific northwest forest and range experiment station, U.
