Athletics Only
Four Points Under
Leading Red Sox
New York, July 29 (IP) People
who just can't believe It when
iLv look in the standings and see
that the Athletics are still up
there were calling them the typo
'raphieal errors of baseball to
Jay but, no kidding, they might
steal that pennant.
They were in second place, just
jour percentage points behind the
Red Sox.
Mack's waiver-price Infield cost
him less than $40,000 and the rest
of the club, picked up in player
draft marts and off sand lots
stood him around $40,000 more.
That's why club owners with ex
tensive farm systems and high
priced scouts are alarmed. They
say it would set baseball back half
a century if the A's would win the
pennant.
In order for the A's to beat
Greenberg's Indians, 4 to 3 yester
day center fielder Larry Doby had
to get hit on top of the head by a
fly ball which he lost in the sun
and which bounced away for a
two-base error that scored the ty
ing and winning tallies. That's
the way the A's win ball games.
With two out and with Barney
McCoskey on base with a single
and Ray Coleman oy way ot a
walk, Don White lofted the easy
flv that conked the negro out
fielder. Dick Flowers survived for
his 10th victory.
Superstition caught up with the
Red Sox alter iJ straignt victo
ries and they lost a 13 to 0 deci
sion at Detroit, suffering their
worst beating ot the year after
compiling the longest winning
streak of the year.
Beats Senators
Marino Pierettl beat the Senat
ors for the third time since they
traded him to the White Sox, win
ning 2 to 1 as Ralph Hodgin drove
in both runs with a single and
double.
Leo Durocher continued to got
amazingly fine pitching from his
Giant staff, Clint Hartung pitch
ing the second straight shutout
and the fourth since Durocher
took over the club, a three-hit. 5
0 job over the Reds at. New
lorK; .
Once again the Dodeers embar
sed the Cardinals, 12 to 4 at
Pmnblvn nnnnrllmr nnf 1 hit
and scoring eight runs in the
fifth inning.
Outslug Cubs
The Phils outslugged the Cubs,
9 to 4 in a battle of homers in
which Eddie Miller, Andy Semi
nick and Del Ennis got round trip
pers for the winners and Clyde
McCullough, Peanuts Lowrey and
pinch-hitter Al Walker homered
lor Chicago.
The Boston Braves kept their
5H game margin by drubbing the
Pirates, 8 to 2, at night behind the
six-hit pitching of Vern Bickford.
Frank Shea, with ninth-inning
help from Allle Reynolds, pitched
a three-hitter for the Yankees to
beat the St. Louis Browns, 4 to 0.
