WEDNESDAY. JULY 28, 1948 PAGE SIX THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON Former Public Enemy's Brother Elected Sheriff Salllsaw, Okla., July 28 UiE. W. Floyd, brother of one-time public enemy No. 1 Charles (Pretty Boy) Floyd, won a bitter ly fought election for county1 sheriff today. Floyd, 40, a $30 a week grocery clerk, was making his first bid for political office. "I kind of want to show the people that I can do a good job of law enforcement, even though my brother was on the other Bide," he said. ! Partial eleotion returns showed I Floyd leading Henry Jones, the incumbent Sequoyah county sher iff, by 1,100 votes. Feeling Hum High : Feeling has run high in Salll saw ever since Pretty Boy's brother announced his candidacy. A whispering campaign was wag ed against him, attacking him be cause of the notorious record of Pretty Boy, who was killed by the FBI in East Liverpool, O., In 1934. But some political observers be lieved the attacks gained E. W. votes in the hill country areas, where Pretty Boy is still a sort of Robin Hood hero. E. W. also got sympathy and votes when voters learned that his wife is a patient in a tubwu. losis sanitarium at Talihlna, Okla. The sheriff's job, paying $45 a week, will make it easier for E. W. to support her and tho family's four children. Despite the bank-robbing ex ploits of Pretty Boy, the new sheriff has a clean record, him self. He ran on the campaign slo gan, "He ain't perfect, but he's honest." NEW LOOK DANGEROUS Memphis, Tenn.
