The up and coming San Francis
. co Seals swaggered back Into first
place in the Pacific Coast league
today.
It was not surprising that Lefty
O'Doul's boys recovered the pen
' nant lead that they meekly lost
on June 10. The Seals, riding
the crest of a winning streak,
have chalked up eight victories in
the. last nine games. If last
night's murderous 13 to 3 win
over the Los Angeles Angels held
any Indications of the future, the
pennant-fevered Seals will be dif
ficult to blast from the top
again.
The Hollywood Stars made sure
that the Seals would not be
crowded and elbowed at the top
of the PCL head by blasting the
Oakland Acorns out of first place.
They unleashed a 16-hlt attack
which scuttled Casey Stengel's
lads 7 to 4.

when it was learned tiiat back
stroke star Robert Cowell had
strained his back.
Coach Rohert Kiphuth of the
U. S. swimmers said that Cowell
"was in pretty bad shape." Cowell
a naval academy graduate irom
Pittsburgh, did not work out with
the team today. Kiphuth said it
was -too early to say whether he
would miss the Olympio competi
tion.
Cowell, Allen Stack of Yale and
Howard Patterson of Michigan
State are the U. S.'s three 100-
meters backstroke entries.
