Co. plant on orders of Gov. Clarence W. Meadows today to keep "law and order" In the contract dispute with the United Mine Workers district 50. State police superintendent W. E. Burchett concentrated the lorce here after the Kanawha county sheriff's office reported it was unable to "copo with the emergency." It followed sporadic outbreaks of disorder In which at least nine persons have been injured since the UMW's catch-all pulled its men oil tne job tour days ago. Feeling: Tense Although feeling was still re ported tense between pickets and non-strikers, the chief state ex ecutive said the "situation is im proved and I expect it to con tinue to improve." The state police were summon ed to augment sheriff's deputies charged with the Job of enforcing a county court injunction against violence and limiting picketing. Yesterday's night shift was the first group which had been able to enter the gates without inci dent since the dispute broke. Union Denied The strike followed a national labor relations board election in which the union was denied a place on the ballot under non-communist affidavit provision of the Taft-Hartley act. The union contested on grounds It has a contract good until Jan uary 1949. Management said no union would be recognized until the question was settled. S. atomic energy commission today that he has its "continued clearance" to work on secret atomic research. The commission gave the noted nuclear physicist a clean bill on the basis of two "thorough and painstaking investigations'" by the FBI, involving interviews with more than 300 persons. Liquor Board Imposes Permits Portland, Ore., July 17 IB The Oregon state liquor control com mission has ruled that after No vember 1 all waitresses and bar tenders serving or mixing alco holic drinks must be licensed. The commission yesterday unanimously passed the contro versial regulation 19 which will require all .persons serving li quor to have permits issued by the commission. The regulation makes possible a closer check on operation of taverns and clubs.
