King, OSC extension soils SDeclalist, who points out that garden vegetable water re quirements increase as the crops apnroacn maturity. Oregon sum mer showers are seldom heavy enougn to aiiect the irrigation schedule. King says the common garden wcretabtes vary a great deal In their response to water. If only a limited amount of wafr Is avail- ible, the sol's (medalist suggests tnat it ne applied on crops that need It most surh as cucumbers. nole beans and tomatoes. Water on these crops Imnroves auality and keens the plants bearinc con tinuously over a long neriod of time, thus giving a high return tor water applied. Crops Produce Yields. Examples of crops that produce fair yields without water are corn, pumpkins and squash. King points out, however, that anyone wno nas eaten irrigated sweet corn, for example, is seldom ever mMsfied again with non-irrigated corn. There are other crops that can be. grown during- the early sum mer without watering, but irriga tion makes successive plantings nosslble. These type garden crops delude cabbage, carrots, onions, and other short-lived plants. ' Water Need Increases With any of the crops, the need for water increases as the crop snnroaches maturity. King states, ''ole beans, forexample, may re--ulre only one or two waterings "itil the first bloom. Then, to 'een the croo comlni? nole beans eed water everv' week, perhaps "'tee a week during hnt weather. As an easv sipn to know whpn ints ae In reel of additions1 "'tcr. Italy Paralyzed By General Striker Reds on March Rome, July 15 (IP) Italian com munists clamped a nearly airtight general strike on Italy today, al most paralyzing the entire strife- swept nation in reprisal for the attempted assassination of their chieftain, Palmiro Togliattl. The government of Premier Al. cide de Gasperl, threatened with overthrow by communist incite ment, debated .the possibility of ordering troops to seize the state railways in order to keep the most vital traffic moving. lamnet caned De Gasperi called a special cab inet meeting at the government palace. Nearly 2,000 police, back ed by trucks and tanks, barricad ed the palace while about 8,000 demonstrators some chanting "Kevoiution, revolution met a few blocks away. At noon about 9,000 commu nists waving red flags and earry-j lng huge portraits of TogllattL" paraded In silence around PojjF clinic Hospital, where their wounded leader was recovering. A committee of communist and left-wing socialist deputies and senators entered the hospital to pay their respects to Togliattl. The amosphere generally was calmer today despite the strike, News that Togliattl had a good night at Polyclinic hospital helped clear the air. The latest medical report said of Togliattl: rutlent Improves Tranquil night. Patient slent. Nervous system eood. General condition in respect to yesterday Improved. Post-operative rela tions good."
