"They're off," -shouted'the an nouncer. "It's a stickup," said the strang er. He pulled a .32 caliber pistol from his pocket, ripped out the telephone wires and lined the 19 eager bettors in the place against the wall. Forcing the proprietor from his cage, the bandit reached into the man's pocket and pulled out a handful of $5 and $10 bills. "Chicken feed," said the bandit. "Where's the real money?" "That's all there is," said the nervous proprietor. Disgustedly, the bandit passed the money out to the patrons and left. Chortling, the bettors stuffed the money into their pockets and walked out, the proprietor right behind them pleading for his money back. Independent League Leaders Get Scare in 7 to 5 Contest The Palace Billiards continued to a be a threat to the Industrial league leaders, the strong Jaycee club, by dumping fourth place Medo-Utnd creamery. 11-3. and combing two Medo-Land pitchers ror ten hits In last night's only league contest. The first softball game last night was a scare for the Inde pendent league leaders, Cash man's, as they barely scraped by the Javcees in an exhibition con test, 8-7. The Palace, collectively the speediest team In either league, made all the runs they needed In the first two frames, scoring four times on five hits. In the first frame, first baseman Voos singled to drive in one run, then left fielder MacCauloy doubled to drive in two more. In the next stanza, Vernle Wallan; speedy lit tle outfielder, took three bases on an error, then scored on an infield hit by shortstop Maudlin. The Palace scored in every frame but the sixth, and had a big four-run inning in the last of the fifth. Mcdo-Land, rated an underdog on the basis of the two teams' last meeting., looked like they might be tough in the first frame, get ting two of the nine hits they got for the evening and converting them inlo one run. It was but a momentary splurge, however, for the Palace, behind the fine pitching of Bill Halverson, shut them out for five straight frames. In the seventh, Medo-Land got three hits to score two runs, making the final total 11-3. and sending the Palace back into a second place tie with All State Realty. Voos was the game's top hitter, getting three hits in three offi cial trips to the plate. Voos is now batting .500, with 12 hits in 24 up, which is one of the best averages in the Industrial league. The Jaycees, coming up from the "B" league for a game with the "A" league leaders, had a lead in the game just once, but Cash man's never let them keep it. With the Jaycees leading 4-3, the victors tallied five times in the bottom of the third to score the winning runs. Cashman's only scored In two innings, the first when they scor ed three runs and the big third stanza, but it was enough to top the best efforts of the Jaycees. The losers tallied two in the second, two In the third, two in the sixth and when they needed two more just one In the seventh. Lewis McCarthy hit a two-run homer for the losers In the sixth Inning. The Jaycees will be out again tonight, having a game scheduled with an improving team, Jess's Pastime, of Sisters. The Sisters club is anchored In fifth place In the Industrial league. In the evening's second game, Superior cafe will attempt to get back on the victory path, that team being scheduled to meet the tough Childs' Hardware club. Both teams will be out to use the other as a stepping stone to get at I Davles (6) and Jensen. the Independent league pennant. Last nleht's scores: .
