Central Oregon
Pleases Visitors
Mr. and Mrs. H. Bardcn, of
Seattle, were holiday guests of
Mr. and Mrs. Don Shlngler. Their
visit to Central Oregon was the
climax to a trip which took them
through the southwestern states,
Grand Canyon national park and
south to Mexico. "Bend beats
everything we saw on our trip,"
they told their hosts. "Your city
really went all-out to entertain
guests, providing all kinds of en
tertainment, and even throwing
in a fire for extra excitement."
The Bardens were especially im
pressed by Petersen's rock gard
ens, and commented that "too few
people in Central Oregon point
out to visitoars the easy aecesilril
ity of this unique attraction."
Strange Leeches Found
In Pre-Historic Well
Flaestaff. Ariz. UU-A . former
U. S. navy diver has found viiilV;
lions ot mysterious leeches in
the depths of a prehistoric In
dian water hole near here.
The diver, Herbert L. Charbon
neau, discovered the objects
about 35 feeta below the surface
of Montezuma well, now a na
tional monument.
Charbonneau descended the
murky depths in a diving helmet
he fashioned from a surplus navy
Mark III gas mask.
He could offer no explanation
for the leeches. Dr. Harold S.
Colton of the Museum of North
ern Arizona said he would reserve
an opinion until he had a chance
to examine a handful of the
creatures Charbonneau brought
up with him.

Railroad That Isn't
Still Pays Dividends
Rochester, N. Y. HPi The Ro
chester and Genesee Valley rail
road is the only line in the na
tion entirely debt free. But, then,
the railroad isn't running either.
However, for a railroad which
doesn't run, the R. & G. V. doesn't
do badly for its stockholders. It
pays them a total annual dividend
of four per cent on $555,200. And
that dividend is guaranteed ovjry
year until 2051.
It happened this way: In 1351
the railroad was organized by a
group of Rochesterians ' to run
from Rochester to Avon. It had
a capital structure of $555,200
and a 200-year franchise.
In 1871, the Erie railroad want
ed to buy the R. & G. V. The
stdckholders refused to sell, but
they offered to lease the line to
the Erie in return for a guaran
ty! annual return of six per cent
of the capitalization.
The Erie agreed and a lease
was signd running until 2051.
Since then the Erie has had all
the responsibility, and the R. &
G. V. stockholders have just col
lected dividends.
Once, however, In the early
1940s, the stockholders agreed to
make a concession to the Erie.
They allowed the interest rate to
be lowered to four per cent.

Shoes Not Sanitary,
Foot Expert Says
Oklahoma City '111 "The shoe
is the most unsanitary article of
body covering in existence," ac
cording to Dr. Felton O. Gamble,
foot exeprt.
"There Is heat, darkness and
moisture the same conditions
that produce mold on cheese or
bread," Gamble told a meotln;:
of the Southwestern Chiropody
Congress here.
That is why so many persons
have athlete's fool, he said.
"A fastidious woman who nev

than a day will woar her shoes
six months and keep them stored
In a dark closet when she s not
wearing them," . the doctor
chlded.
"Men are worse because their
shoes are almost without venti

To guard against fungus infec

shoes at least twice a day and
expose the unused pair to sun
