Orr, curator of birds and mam mals at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. He said the temperature of some species of inactive bats va ries with environment. Live bats placed in a cold-room where the temperature was kept between 40 and 50 degrees F. soon had about the same temperature. Dr. Oit pointed out that the cold room conditions are about the same as in the caves in which the bats sleep through the winter.
