Beat Navy
The middies brought the inter
collegiate championship back to
the Atlantic seaboard last year
for the first time in eight regat
tas. They represented the heav
iest boatload in a field of 11 col
leges and, naturally, are hoping
for a rough course early tomor
row evening.
Along with navy, Princeton and
Cornell also were given a good
chance of keeping the title in
the east. Cornell suffered its only
defeat this season at the hands 'of
navy and trained well over the
longer Poughkeepsle course last
week. Princeton also worked well
on the turbid Hudson and will
bear watching.
Columbia, Penri, Rutgers, Syra
cuse, Wisconsin and M. I. T. com
pleted the field. None, however,
appeared to have the "stamina
and finish to be real contenders.
Big Sum Offered
For Oregon Boxer
Portland, June 21 UP) Jack
(Doc) Kearns, the fight manager
who guided Jack Dampsey's box
ing career, has offered $20,000 for
the contract of Jack (Ginger)
Snapp, Klamath Falls, Ore., mid
dleweight. But Snapp's manager, Roy
Drake, turned down the offer.
Kearns predicted that within a
couple of years Snapp will be a
top middleweight contender
perhaps an eventual champion.
Snapp will fight a 10-round
semifinal fight against LeRoy
Wade, San Francisco, prior to the
main event between heavy
weights Joe Kahut, Woodburn,
and Joe Maxim, Cleveland, at the
Civic auditorium tomorrow night.
Kearns, who handles Maxim,
watched Snapp work out. It will
be Snapp's first bout since he de
cisioned the former champion, Al
Hostak, last March.

Portland's Jail
Called Antiquated
Portland, June 21 tin 'The.
Portland City club has made pub
lic a committee report criticizing
Portland's jail facilities as "noth
ing more than a small town
lockup."
The report said:
' "The jail Is both antiquated and
inadequate. However it may
have been judged at the time it
was constructed, today it is is
something of which this city
should be heartily ashamed."
The report specifically criti
cized the use of "drunk tanks"
and said they should never be
used again. .. .
"The practice of holding pris
oners incommunicado should be
entirely discontinued, but prof--fered
bail should be declined from
intoxicated persons until they are
sober," the repoit said.
The report will be discussed
at the elub's Friday luncheon
meeting.
