Portland Leaders
To Play in Bend
One of the top Softball teams of
the Portland area will invade Cen
tral Oregon this week end for
games against Superior cafe Sat
urday night at Bend and the Red
mond V. F. W. Sunday afternoon
at Redmond.1
The Portland team, currently
leading the 165 teams in the Port
land Softball association, is Fri
bert electric and features a bat
tery including Kenny Westmore
land, pitcher, and Harvey Oberg,
catcher.
Allows Few Hits
Westmoreland has pitched six
games so far this season and has
allowed a total vof only eight hits.
All six of the games were shut
outs and two of them were no-hit,
no-run affairs. In the six games,
Oberg has Piled up a batting av
erage of .358, including four home
runs. -
Against the Superior1 club Sat
urday night the Portla'nders will
come up against one of , the top
Central Oregon hurlers, Red Lo
gan. There is quite a bit of con
troversy on which pitcher, Logan
or Westmoreland, has the fastest
ball, and the Saturday night game
should settle the debate.
The Saturday night game here
will be under the lights of the
municipal field, starting at 8:30
o'clock.

(Childs Hardware
Defeats Superior
A team can come a long way in
ono year, and Childs Hardware,
stepping from fourth place In the
Industrial league to becoma one
of the top teams in the Independ
league, rose to the heights last
night to dump heavily favored
Superloc cafe, 9-8 in an exhibi
tion contest. In last night's only
league game, the Jaycees made It
four league wins without a loss
by defeating Medo-Land cream
ery 11-5. .
It was that old second look at
the offerings of Superior pitcher
Red Logan that paid off for the
Childs team, for the Hardware
men pounded him for 10 hits in
getting the victory.
Superior also got 10 hits, and,
that team scored more earned
runs than did Childs, but Super
ior's errors and the scrappy do-or-die
spirit of the Hardware beys
could not. be overcome. Childs
played their best game of the sea
son, backing up pitcher Honnie
Hull with superb efforts in the
field. Superior made six costly
errors, the most that team has
made for two years. .
Childs Scores Easy
Childs started hitting In the
first frame, scoring one run on
two hits. They continued hitting
In the second frame with a flurry
of base hits that netted them five
runs when It was ail over.
From that point on Superior
started playing ball, but the dam
age had been done. Superior,
which scored its first run in the
fourth' frame, tried hard to .come
back with one in the fourth, three
in each of the fifth and sixth, and
with the score 9-7 for Childs,
scored just one more run in the
top of the seventh to leave the
final score in favor of one of the
scrappiest teams In either league,
Childs Hardware. ' . .
Superior second baseman Son
ny Joanis hit the game's only
home run in the sixth inning
with the sacks empty. -Jaycees
on Top
' The Jaycees' remained at the
top of the Industrial league heap
with a four and no record, easily
defeating Medo-Land, which did
n't catch on to the pitches of Les
Schwab until the sixth when they
swatted him for four runs and
three hits. That, however, was
their biggest inning, getting only

five runs on five hits, being spear

blow by center fielder Snow.
Tonight at 7:15, the Redmond

strength against a team it defeat

the tact that Redmond has two
of the leagues' top pitchers, Red

match their speed against the
strength of All-State Realty. Pal
