PAGE FOURTEEN THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND, OREGON THURSDAY, APRIL 29, 1948 Wrights Invented Airplane? Don't BeSilly, Moscow Says '. London (IP) All right, folks, tune in for the Radio Moscow quiz program. ' i Krom the soientific claims Mos cow Radio has been making, you might imagine it running like this: "Who Invented the airplane?" : The Wright Brothers? ' Sorry. That's one of those west ern bourgeois fables. It was a Russian, Mozhaisk by name. The date 1878 or 25 years before the Wrights "copied" him at Kitty Hawk, N. C. "Who invented the electric light bulb?" i Thomas Alva Edison? . ' Wrong Again t Wrong again. Astonishing how these capitalistic fictions persist. Another Russian A.- N. Losygin and the date was at least seven years before Edison thought he had made a new discovery. "What about penicillin?" ! Doesn't everybody know Sir Alexander Fleming discovered it a few years ago? No. Russian medical science was using penicillin practically at least 50 years before Fleming. . The above and lots more have been broadcast by the Russians for the past few weeks to prove that most of the world's import- ; ant inventions and discoveries were made by Russians. The "for eigners" to whom such innova tions have been credited are de scribed as as more imitators and in some case imposters. Some More Revisions Here are a few of Radio Mos- - cow's revisions of western rec ords: The law of the preservation of weight and matter was first stat ed by Mikhail Lomonosov. It was , "conlirmed" 17 years later by Lavoisier, who has somehow been credited with the actual dis covery all these years. . ; Lomonosov ' also founded the science of physical chemistry, a honor hitherto falsely associated Attorney, Editor Take Over Paper New York, April 29 P Mar shall Field III announced today that he has sold controlling in terest in the newspaper PM to San Francisco Attorney Bartley C. Crum and Joseph Barnes, for- mer foreign editor of the New York Herald-Tribune. Field will " retain a minority interest. ' The Chicago millionaire has been seeking new financial back- ,' ers for the newspaper since March 12,when he notified the staff- that the paper would have to cease publication if a purchas- er could not be found. Crum and Barnes issued a statement that they planned no immediate-changes in the staff or the policies of the liberal news paper. Crum; a republican, who sup ported the late Wendell Willklc, but who has denounced the Henrv Wallace third party movement, said he planned to move here from San Francisco to become publisher of the newspaper. Barnes, who also actively cam paigned for Willkie. will become editor-in-chief of PM. - with '.he Gorman scientist. Wil liam Ostwald, who was hi least 30 years late (Radio Moscow says). , ' J'rofen?or Balezin. who has con- tributed .'some of these collections over the Moscow Radio, also slates that-Russians founded elecJ tro-chemist.ry and physico-chemi cal analysis. Marconi Scooped On various occasions recently. Radio Moscow had given the dis tinction of discovering wireless to the Russian Popov (not Marcenl) and of invontfjig he steam engine to Ivan Polzir, nov (not the Eng lishman James Watt, who was 20 years late). In the field of, geographical dis covery, Russian also were pre eminent, it seems. They discovered the Antarctic continent, the Marshall islands and many others' In the Pacific, made the first plans to explore the North Pole and the entire Arctic basin and were the first to shed light on the settlement of Alaska and the coast of North America. No one was scheduled to get hurt, however. All-weather fighter planes of the 325th group and the 52nd group will intercept the maraud ing superforts in the daylight mock bombing attack. The maneuvers are designed to test the defenses of the Pacific northwest. Long before they drone into Washington skies the B-29's will be picked up on radar screens. Will Deploy Fighters Then the control center at Ar lington 45 miles north of Seattle will coordinate Intercepting fighters deployed between Mc Chord field and Spokane. The maneuvers were announc ed by the air force In Washington, D. C. But the mission, destination or number of planes taking part In the staged warfare was not re. vealed.
