Hay Fever Drugs
Receiving Tests
Near Umatilla
By Paul F. Ellis
(Unittnl Prtwa Scit-nre Writer)
New York, April 27 tU'i Sci
enee has three drugs to aid hay
lever victims tins year.
The newest of these is anthal
lan, which in recent tests has
shown to have fewer bad side-
effects than the other two ben
adryl and pyribenzaminc.
Dr. Martin S. Kleckner. Jr.. re
porting in the current issue of
the Annals of Internal Medicine,
official publication of the Ameri
can College of Physicians, report
ed on testing the three drugs at
the Umatilla ordnance depot, Ord
nance, Ore.
Situation Favorable
There, he said, the situation
"was particularly favorable for
observing cases of hay fever,
asthma and various perennial al
lergic manifestations, as the
depot is located on a large plateau
of sand and desert weeds, and,
because of the continuous activity
of the wind, pollens, dust and ani
mal emanations are widely dis
seminated throughout the coun
tryside. He reported that the patients
under study were military per
sonnel, laborers at the depot, or
civilians living in the area. About
170 persons participated in the
test, the average time being 30
days.
Drugs Potent
He found that both Benadryl
and pyrihenzalme were more po
tent than anthallan, but that each
had disadvantages in that they
caused drowsiness. He found that
anthallan, while a weak agent
against the so-called histamine
(believed to be the villain that
causes allergy), was effective in
treating hay feaver. running
noses and the like. .
Anthallan, he reported, has an
outstanding quality" in that it
appears to prevent relapses In
that it appears to nrevent re
lase.s In hives and skin rashes due
to hypersensitivity.

criminate use of honadryl, pyri-1
zen amine and amliallaii "should
be discouraged because of the se
vere side reactions encountered,
particularly with benadiyl and
pyribenzamine." He said that fur
ther studies of all three drugs
snouid be made.
The hay fever season is divided
into three parts spring, summer
and fall.
Remote Control Makes
Baby Sitting Easy
Shanks Village, N.Y. mi Ma
jor J. L. Wood, of Seattle, Wash.,
who is studying at Columbia Uni
versity teachers' college to take
over a chain of radio stations in
Japan, has devised a radio baby
sitter which enables him to care
for several infants while sitting
at home.
A sensitive, microphone is plac
ed by each child's crib and is con
nected with an amplifier labeled
with the baby's name In Wood's
home. The ticking of a clock plac
ed near each microphone allows
him to check whether It is work
ing properly.
When a baby cries Wood has
tens to the spot with the neces-
sar - change of diapers drink of
water or whatever else may be
required.
Bodies Of Yanks
Sought On Islands
Faipan, Marianas Islands IJi
American soldiers with rifles at
the ready are still wading ashore
on Pacific islands.
They are looking for dead
Americans but fear that they will
find live Japanese.
The search is being conducted
by a unit of 55 men under Capt.
Arthur A. Arena, San Francisco.
He is concentrating just now on
the tiny islands that are scattered
like grain between the war-time
B-29 base of Tinian and the Japa
nese empire. '
. Crippled bomhers struggling to
get back to Tinian often crashed
and burned on the-islands. The
bodies of the crews were never
found. Sometimes aeriai pictures
made at the time showed the site
of the crash. . .
The pictures, along'with all
other possible data, are carried by
the search team as It goes ashore.
The troops land in battle forma
tion just in case they meet Jap
anese. ,
Japanese soldiers who have
lived in the Jungle for four years
have been sighted on several is
lands but so far they have done
nothing but keep out of the way.
The hunt, scattered over an
area of 180,000 square miles, will
take, another year to complete.

How to clean
a wnasniem
vtith us arouno
Sounds simple, but we've spent
thousands of dollars analyzing
road film and finding what takes
it off best. We learned, for instance,
that road film varies in different
parts of the West; so We developed
cleaners we know get it off. And
in case your windshield's bugged
up, we have a special cure for
that, too.
