Kostrukoff's Don Cossacks
To Appear In Local Concert

sack chorus, composed of 27 sing
ers and dancers-from the region
of the River Don in southern Rus
sia, wilf be presented in concert
Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 8:30 p. m. on
the stage of the Tower theater,
under sponsorship, of the local
Community Concert association.
Director of the chorus is Nich
olas Kostrukoff, who organized
the group in Prague in 1926. un
der high patronage of the presi
dent of Czecho-Slovakia, Thomas
SMasaryk, and Edouard Benes,
minister or foreign office. Thcv
made an auspicious debut that
vear in Vienna, and their first
American appearance was at the
San Francisco world fair in 1939.
Their New York debut was at

Cossack born and bred. The mu

CLUB MEETING SET'
North Redmond, Feb. 21 (Spe
cial) The Sunshine club will
meet Tuesday, February 24, for a
1 o'clock luncheon at the home,
of Mrs. C. K. Ferguson, with Mrs,
Paul Griffith as co-hostess. The
regular business meeting will be
held at 2 p. m., featuring election
of officers and revealing of "se
cret sisters." All members were
requested to be present.

Wednesday Night
An attractive bridal shower was
given Wednesday ewning at the
home of Mrs. F. N. Van Matre,
honoring Miss Nancy Organ,
bride-elect of Claude Vandevert.
Mrs. Ida Reynolds was co-hostess
for the party, and Mrs. Don An
derson, Mrs. Bill Murphy, Mrs.
Lee McConnell and Mrs. Wilfred
Burgess, daughters of Mrs. Van
Matre, assisted In arranging the
decorations.
Games provided entertainment
for the evening, with prizes go
ing to Mrs. Pearl Staples', high,
and Mrs. Anno Forbes, low. The
table and buffet were decorated
as a miniature aisle and altar, in
pink and white, with candles at
either side of the "altar." As the
refreshments were served, Miss
Ruth Organ and Miss Adelva
Bartlett sang "Wonderful One."

A full Schedule of speaking en
gagements has been arranged for
Mrs. Claire Argow, of Portland,
executive secretary of the Ore
gon'State Prison association, who
will arrive in Bend Sunday eve
ning for a series of lectures on
the results of the Yale alcohol
studies. Her appearance here is
sponsored by the social studies
group of A. A. U. W., under the
direction of Mrs. Don Denning
and Mrs. George Simerville. Mrs.
Argow was sent to Yale univer
sity in the summer of-1947 by
the prison association for a six
weeks' period, to observe the se
ries of studies, experiments and
lectures conducted there on the
alcohol problem.
She will speak Monday noon,
February 23, to the Kiwanis club
at their weekly luncheon at the
Pine tavern. In the afternoon
she will appear before the Bend
Study club and Allied Arts club
meeting jointly at the home of
Mrs. Carl Johnson, 498 Broadway.

meeting at 8 p. m. in the court

Gala Meeting
Epsilon Theta Rho club No. 5
entertained nearly 80 guests Wed
nesday night at a meeting which
followed a 6:30 dinner served by
members of the Bend Rebekah
lodge. - Besides local club mem
bers, girls from Culver, Redmond,
Prinevllle and Madras, accom
panied by their advisers, partici
pated in the evening's entertainment.-
Mrs. Frank Gray headed
the dinner committee.
The Bend club held initiation
ceremonies for eight candidates.
They included June Clark, Sher
ril Gray, Buena Barton and Fran
ces Forbes, all of Bend; Maureen
Heising, of Culver, and Jackie
Kelsey, Doris Holt and Marie
Sanders, of Redmond.
The girls were attractively
dressed in pastel formals. A
group of Rebekuhs, headed by
Mrs. Fred Gibson, assisted the
Bend club with their drills,
Preliminary plans were made
for the district Theta Rho con
vention, to be held in Bend in
April. Kathleen Farr is district
president, and Norma Kelsay, dis
trict secretary.
Beginning a campaign to raise
funds for convention expenses,
the local girls will sell candy at
the next Rebekah lodge meeting,
February 27, their president,
Martha May, announced.
