The Bend Lava Bears scored a
clear-cut victory over the Eugene
Axemen here last night, bll to si
to move from last place up to
lourth place In the Big Six league,
The Lava Bears moved into a
10 to 4 lead alter live minutes
of the first quarter had been play
ed and were never In trouble the
rest of the game.
Lowell Maudlin, Bend forward,
was the big gun for the Bears in
the opening quarter, sinking five
.field goals for 10 of the Bears'
18 first quarter points. First pe

Bill Sheffold, Bend guard, was
again high scorer for the game
with 25 points, earned from 10
Held goals and five free throws.
Sheffold's scoring was well-scattered
through the game, but was
heaviest in the final period when
he collected 10 points. Don Ben
son, . Bend's otner . forward, had
a good evening with six field goals
and two free throws for 14 points.
Lfnder, a Eugene substitute,
was high for his. team with 15
points.
The Axemen carried a big
height advantage In the game and
had better than average control
oi the bacKboards. The Bears nul
lified this with a higher number
of interceptions, smoother floor
play, and better shooting.
Tonight the Bears will wind up
their Blit Six season In a game
here with Springfield. The main
game is called for 7:30 p. m. with
the Junior varsity game to fol

The West Side tavern bowling
team accompanied by Its sponsor,
Bill Harris, will go out to Gil
christ this Sunday to play the Gil
christ team on its home alley.
The Gilchrist team has lost two
games to Bend teams and will be
gunning for a victory from the
tavern team. The men who will
make up the team will be Elmer
Brown, captain, Fred Grlndle, Bill
Grlndle, Morley Madden and Paul
Crocker.
The Episcopal church bowling
team will bowl against a team
from the First Lutheran church
at the Cascade Bowl beginning at
7:30 Saturday night. The mem
bers that will represent the two
teams is not known at the pres
ent time.
The Gilchrist women's tram
will bowl against a Bend women's
team Sunday afternoon at the
Cascade Bowl. Arllne Robert is
captain of the Bend team and has
a very goqd aggregation lined up.
Louise Keown is the captain on
the Gilchrist team and her line
up is: Happy Anderson, Llla Mae,
Garner, Ann Speed, Jeanne Nor
lin and Louise Keown.

The Lions club maintained Its
load In the league even though it
dropped three points to the Jun
ior chamber of commerce. The
Knights of Columbus held the tie
for fourth place with the Junior
chamber by taking three points
from the Kiwiinis team. The
Shriners pushed the Rotary team
further into the cellar by taking
three points.
The high team series of the
evening was rolled by the Knlghtn
of Columbus with a total of i!H3.
The Knights also had the hirih
single game of 861.

Injured In Chicago Match
Chicago. Feb. 21 UP) Sam Ba
roudl, a 20-year-old New York
Negro light heavyweight boxer,
died In a hospital today from in

Eugene, Ore., Feb. 21 HP) The
University of Washington re
mained undefeated In northern di
vision swimming competition to
day and also was holder of two
new records after defeating Ore
gon's mermen 49 to 26 hero yes
terday. Pete Poullson clipped eight
tenths of a minute off the. 220
yard freestyle meet record set by
Jack Medlca of Washington In
1934. His time was 2:13.31.
The Washington medley relay
team of George Heaiu-y, Jack
Powell and Dick Campbell set a
new division record In the 3110
yard medley relay of 3:01. The
old record, held by Oregon since
1940, was 3:01.31. A new pool
record In the 400-yard freestyle
relay was not allowed when
Washington was disqualified in
the event.

Fighter Fatally
Baroudl's manager, disappeared
when he learned of Baroudl's
death. Later he was tracked to
the Chicago airport by reporters.
No charge was filed against
him, and he was expected to ap
pear at the inquest.
Police said they were not hold
ing Charles, a Cincinnati Negro
ranked as the leading contender
for the light heavyweight cham
pionship of Gus Lesnevich. They
said that he had promised to re
main in the city as long as neces
sary and would appear at the In
quest. Dr. John J. Drammls, state box
ing commission physician, said
Baroudl's death was caused by a
brain hemorrhage. He said It re
sulted from a "series of blows on
the head," but he was not certain
the Injuries were suffered In the

of the evening, nnd Wilklns scor
ed 13 points each to lead Oregon.

game, topped all scoring with 16.

The University of Calif ofnia
was in a position to clinch the
southern division Pacific Coast
conference basketball title today,
but the northern division re
mained a wide-open race.
The Bears won their seventh
consecutive PCC victory without
a defeat last night from south
em California 53 to 50.
A California win tonight
against UCLA would assure the
Bears of no worse than a tie for
the crown, and If coupled with
USC defeat by Stanford will give
the Berkeley team the champion
ship. '
In the northwest, Washington
came through In the last minute
to topple Washington State, 55 to
50, to pull into a. first-place tie
with the Cougars.
Approximately 5,800 fans
packed the Pullman gym to
watch the teams swap the lead

Sammy White and Bill Vander
burgh iced the torrid battle for
Washington. Actually, 17 free
throws from the foul line gave
the game to the Huskies. WSC's
center, Vlnce Hanson, fouled out
early In the second half. Jack
Nichols was high point man for

OSC Jolted
At Eugene, Oregon jolted Ore
gon State's title hopes with a 58
to 54 victory, setting the Beavers
one-half game behind the leaders.
The Stanford Indians used an
air-tight zone defense to throttle
UCLA's fast break and romp to
an easy 55 to 47 -win.
Pacific Lutheran was assured
of the Washington State Inter
collegiate conference crown by
dumping wnitwortn, 74 to 53.
Junior Varsity
39 To 35 Victor
The Bend Junior varsity scored
a victory in their Big Six game
here last night, defeating the
Eugene Jayvees by a score of 39
to 35.
The Eugene five ended the first
half with an 18 to 17 lead. The'
lead shifted several times in the
final period before the Lava
Bears went ahead near the end
of the game. Tom Niebergall
added an extra field goal In the
final minute of play to provide
the Bears with their final points.
