Bend's high-geared Lava Boars,
definitely off form for the eve

customary whirlwind I i n i s h,
eliminated a Corvallis load in the
final minutes of play here last
night in a Big Six league battle to
nose out the Spartans 41 to 39.
It was a finish that again brought
the capacity crowd to its feet as
the Boars successfully struggled
to maintain their load against a
team that topped the Bond boys

Well along in the final quar

Spartans, surging into a 34 to 34
tie. Dick Maudlin made a basket
to shove the Bears into the lead,
and after that they were never

the final 4's minutes of play.
With Bend leading 36 to 34, Dick
Maudlin missed two free tosses,
then, in an effort to quiet the
teams, officials called time out,

Sugar Robinson
Wins Ring Title
New York, Dee. 21 IP As
Ray (Sugar) Robinson donned
his new welterweight crown to-.
day. It must have seemed doubly ,
precious: for he had gained It
"the hard way" In the toughest
brawl of his career, after waiting
five years for a title shot.
For six tumultuous rounds last '
night in Madison Square garden. 1
it seemed thnt Sugar Ray's long
wait might be climaxed by a
knockout defeat Instead of a
crowning victory. Hut ho rose
from the canvas, and came from j

Tommy Bell In their battle for
the vacant title.
Fight For Crown
The two tall negroes fought for
the crown left vacant when Mar

on Sept. 25 because of nose In
juries.
And what a fight It was! The
crowd of 15,670 was on its foot
during those six rounds, In fren
zied anticipation of the biggest
boxing upset In years as Bell, a
5-1 underdog, shook the great
Robinson with crisp left hooks
that had him groggy again and
again.
Bell of Youngstown, O. a
slender, dark-brown youngster
with the big shoulders and mus
cular arms of a light heavy
weight had the garden In pan
demonium in the second round
when he floored the pride of Har
lem with a left hook to the chin
for a count of seven. Robinson,
badly hurt but desjM'ralely clever,
evaded a kayo and was fighting
back gamely before the round
ended.
Going Into the seventh round.
Bell 23, was ahead on the United
Press score sheet, three rounds to
two, with one even.
But in the decisive seventh
round, Robinson 25, barraged
Bell's body with such an explo

never recovered completely. Dur-;
ing this smashing attack, Robin-;
son hammered his opponent into
a corner and blasted him so ter
rifically that Tommy's knees
